Georgia is about to become the first state to approve the use of the Bible as a textbook in public schools.
On Monday, the state Senate passed a bill providing money to high schools that offer elective classes in the Bible and setting specific guidelines for those classes. The bill was approved by Georgia's state House of Representatives last week. Gov. Sonny Perdue is expected to sign the law.
The bill creates two courses - History and Literature of the Old Testament Era and History and Literature of the New Testament Era - that can be offered as electives. It gives the state Department of Education a year to approve the curriculum for the classes, but it requires that the Bible itself, not a textbook, be the core material used. Supplementary materials can also be used.
While I love my Bible, and attend church on a bi-weekly basis....the smarta$$ in me just has to ask it....
When do they start teaching Algebra in Sunday school?
Biology in the pews on Sunday anyone?
I am no more in favor of this than I am of GSA's in school. Neither are appropriate for the environment there.
When I went to school, we had a class called, "The Bible as Literature." I'm stunned this is being considered a first. I will admit that was in the late 70s.
We studied the Bible when I was in high school. In 1998.
It's an ELECTIVE.
It doesn't MATTER.
Should Islamic studies be there as an elective?
How about Hinduiism?
Budhism anyone?
What great news for Georgia - after hearing about the Cynthia McKinney slap.
BTW, we have manners here in Georgia... .

I'm cringing a bit.
I would support this because it would wake up the next generation to the fascist nature of Islam.
Bible Bump!
The Bible is the 'best-seller' of all times. Why shouldn't students be allowed to take the Bible as an elective?
(They would also raise their SAT scores by reading the King James translation.)
I would support this because it would wake up the next generation to the fascist nature of Islam.
Bible study is how we come to know Jesus, and could be a wonderful growth experience for these students. I would also cringe a bit at the context in which His word may be taught by those with the wrong motivations.
On balance though, anyway His word gets spread is a good thing.
Quite a bit of practical biology is handled in the Bible, given the author.
I have personal and admittedly abnormal reasons for cringing.
Get off it. It's merely a Histroy class.
The Bible SHOULD be taught in literature classes because it IS literature...the most influential ever.
These kids are lucky...they are going to be among the smartest in the nation in coming years.
