Martin Humer, 60, has admitted tossing paint and feathers at the statue in central Salzburg in August, prosecutor Barbara Feichtinger said.

He is being investigated for allegedly causing serious damage to an item of public value — a crime that carries a penalty of up to two years in prison or a fine, Feichtinger said. Charges could be filed in coming weeks, she said.

(photo: APA) The "Homage to Mozart" statue, created by German artist Markus Lüpertz, has sparked controversy since it was erected this summer. The bronze figure, which stands almost 3 meters (10 feet) tall, depicts the 18th-century Austrian composer with both male and female features.

The Salzburg Foundation commissioned the 500,000 euro (US$604,000) statue as part of a 10-year-project to place modern art in public Salzburg spaces. It said Humer's attack caused damages worth 35,000 euros (US$42,000).

Man Defaces Privates Of Naked Mozart Statue

March 29, 2006, 12:15 PM

Austria's self-proclaimed "porn hunter" is charged with trying to put a fig leaf of sorts on Mozart.

Authorities in Salzburg accuse 80-year-old Martin Humor and another elderly man of defacing a nude statue of the composer.

Prosecutors say the suspects painted part of the statue with red and green enamel and stuck white feathers on it.

Humor says nude the Mozart "has nothing to do with art and is a kind of pornography."

Austria is in the midst of a yearlong celebration, marking the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth.

There was already a statue of Mozart in the MozartPlatz. Did they really have to commission this piece of schlock, insulting to a great composer? "Modern" art makes me sick. Here's the real statue, partly paid for by Ludwig I of Bavaria:

I think a lot of "modern" art is a scam for pseudo-artists to get money and recognition without ever having to produce anything good. Of course, the movement to make everything ugly and debased has deeper and more sinister roots than just being a scam.

I didn't realize Austria hated Mozart so much.

While I normally decry vandalism, in this case I would be happy to donate to a fund to buy Herr Humer a cutting torch, as a public service. The true vandals are the "Artestes".
