35th Ward residents to vote on 3 referendums (Chicago Living Wage Ordinance)
New Communities Program ^ | February 7, 2006

Shall the Chicago City Council enact the "Chicago Big Box Living Wage Ordinance" requiring all newly constructed retail establishments in Chicago, greater than 75,000 square feet, to pay a minimum "living wage" of at least $10.00 per hour plus $3.00 per hour towards employee health benefits?

That's what the Chicago city council will be debating soon. Little opposition is expected in a city without actual economists. But the positive note is that the suburbs will continue to have a huge boom in small businesses, at the expense of low income and low skilled workers in Chicago. When proponents of the ordinance were told that business would be driven away, they claimed that businesses make empty threats like those all the time.

Chicago? A city without actual economists? Chicago probably has more Nobel prize winning economists in residence at the University of Chicago than any other city in the world.

You need to provide a working link to this story, or it is subject to being pulled.

How many retail businesses start up new locations larger than 75,000 square feet?

Would that be Wal-Mart and only Wal-Mart?

And didn't Wal-Mart already stick it to Chicago?

The city council of Eugene, OR was considering this last year. Many small business owners attended council meetings and said they'd move out, the council dropped it.

It's an interesting story. It'd be a shame if you can't provide a working link in, say, maybe the next 5 minutes.

Hello suburban businesses. Just like the WalMart they thumbed their noses at. Lessons learned is not a must read in Chicago. Actually, It's more of a lessons to be ignored.

From Canada:

"On April 01 the minimum wage in Manitoba gets increased to $7.60 an hour. Local restaurants and retailers back home in the Swan Valley are reacting by cutting hours. This includes my mother, youngest brother and youngest sister." I wrote a post back in September along the lines of your thought - in this case it was backwards, somebody on welfare earned more than somebody working minimal wage (link).

Is Chicago a "sanctuary" (don't ask, don't tell, regarding immigrations status) for illegal aliens?

I bet that most of those who voted for this are also in favor illegal immigrants.

If you want a "living wage" for unskilled/low skilled work there is a simple solution ... secure the border, build a wall and stop importing massive numbers of poor, unskilled, and illiterate.

Outside of Southern Cal and Texas, Chicago probably has the most illegals of any city in America.

$10 AN HOUR? - why not $25 or $50 per hour - why not? after all Ovitz and Eisner make $10,000 per hour - why shouldn't the little guy make at least $100 or $1000 per hour or $5,000 --thats still half of what the fat cats make...or Katie Couric....
