Boehner hints a back down on 'amnesty'
The Washington Times ^ | March 29, 2006 | Charles hurt

Posted on 03/29/2006 7:15:28 AM PST by surely_you_jest

House Majority Leader John A. Boehner refused yesterday to rule out compromising with the Senate to expand the House border security bill to include a guest-worker program or provisions that opponents call "amnesty." "Let's wait and see what the Senate can produce," he told reporters yesterday when asked whether House Republicans would reject the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now in the U.S. to seek citizenship after paying a fine.

Okay fine, then I guess you have no problem if I propose a law that new roofs being put on houses has a floor price of $50,000(i.e no contractor can charge under $50,000).

Go ahead and propose it----nobody will go along with it. And how is that little example supposed to convince us that it's a good thing for employers to hire illegal immigrants instead of Americans?

This is uniting the country, it's one of the only subjects that 80% of the people agree on. The only people it's dividing is the Bush-Bots from the rest of the country.

Good point.

"The president cited a 66 percent increase in border-security funding since he took office, along with a 42 percent increase in interior-enforcement spending and a total of 6 million illegal aliens caught and returned home."

Interesting stat. And it puts the lie to all those folks who insist that deporting the illegal aliens is simply untenable because there are two many of them.

Uh it's a good thing that food is being picked and building are being built.

It was in the old Soviet Union where food rotted in the fields and buildings were not built, due to the zealot micromanaging of the economy, like it seems you wish to propose.

"Ok Jorge, you're right, Bush is serious about Border Security and isn't interested in a North American Union. (bwahahaha)"

It's in bad taste to mock the truth of our increased border security. It's as though you are personally invested in seeing the GOP lose an election, regardless of facts.

You *claimed* that nothing substantial was done. I showed, instead, that 6 million illegals have been captured and deported back to their home countries under President Bush...

...And you mocked that correction as if the truth wasn't important.

There have been six amnesties for illegals since the IRCA of 1986. Check it out. U.S. Amnesties for Illegal Aliens

You can call it rainbows, candycanes and lollipops, if you'd like, but to say Bush is serious about border security is nothing but bald-faced, intentional manipulation of the truth.

Good day.

Congress had no problem passing a tough bankruptcy bill, despite fervent lobbying against it from consumer groups.

If Congress can help credit card companies collect their debts from middle class Americans, the least they could do is treat violations of our immigration laws seriously.

"I showed, instead, that 6 million illegals have been captured and deported back to their home countries under President Bush"

6 million? Really? Why, that's very impressive. It does make me wonder, though, why so many contend that it's virtually impossible to deport the estimated 12 to 20 million who weren't caught at the border. It certainly can't be their number; we'd have them all gone in three years at the current rate of success.

6 million illegal aliens caught and returned home."

I read a story where for every one illegal that gets caught...three slip through. God knows I suck at math, but, if you ask me, that's a hellofalot of illegals floating around. Some of you math people please feel free to correct me, but, that adds up to 18 million that gets in. Somebodies numbers are waaaaaay off.

Here on Earth, the Republicans won't be replaced by anyone who's stronger on immigration

"Lucky for us that they won't be replaced by anybody that is weaker on immigration either." - Junior_G

Not true. Democrats have signed into law 6 of the 7 historical amnesties.

1. Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA), 1986: A blanket amnesty for some 2.7 million illegal aliens
2. Section 245(i) Amnesty, 1994: A temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 illegal aliens
3. Section 245(i) Extension Amnesty, 1997: An extension of the rolling amnesty created in 1994
4. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty, 1997: An amnesty for close to one million illegal aliens from Central America
5. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA), 1998: An amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti

6. Late Amnesty, 2000: An amnesty for some illegal aliens who claim they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty, an estimated 400,000 illegal aliens
7. LIFE Act Amnesty, 2000: A reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty, an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens

Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make. I suspect that the 6,000,000 figure is grossly inflated; but if it isn't, the pro-amnesty folks just lost one of their main talking points.

Looks good! This NYP is smaller and does not have lines like the larger one. Still is clear and shows up well.

Both before and after 911, Bush made it clear that he was on the side of business on this issue and that it was more important than any security risks resulting from weak borders. You show me a person who voted for Bush in 2004 and didn't know how he would come down on this issue and I'll show you someone who isn't ready to be voting. There is something about attacking him now that doesn't smell right to me.

Good use of populist rhetoric to support a very un-populist position. I have to give you credit for that. But yes, I do think that harsh penalties should be enforced against those who hire illegals, since they are the entire reason for the illegal invasion in the first place. Poor Farmer Joe won't be any worse off than the rest of his farmer buddies when all of them have to abide by the law equally.

I didn't think it possible, but you have indeed posted the most idiotic drivel so far on this Mensa-like thread.
