LOL, right. Rumsfeld had NO IDEA that the Russians were helping us by giving Saddam misinformation on our troop movements. He had no clue! Golly. Har!

In all fairness, I don't think this was "reported" by CNN; it's an interpretation of the news conference that is wrong.

Just to follow up, don't believe the administration didn't translate every damn one of those documents, looking forward to the media's attempts to mis-translate them. Remember the old saying: "Never ask a question, unless you know what the answer will be."

Bingo -

SecDef Rumsfeld was brilliant today. The WH is walking the MSM into a tar-pit.

I think this strongly reports our planting bogus information for the russkies to pick up before the war. Good disinformatsia, Don!

They're a political issue now, not a military one. Rumsfeld doesn't need to know about them.

I found the headline to be unbelievable since Rummy and some Admiral at last week's presser stated that they were using the docs to learn what the Saddam regime was thinking at the time of the invasion.

The most striking comment at that presser was, "...there will be some surprises..." or words to that effect.

That presser was held prior to the release of the Russian connection document on Friday.

Rumsfeld has always struck me as a weak link in the generally strong chain of the Bush II administration. Most of the senior Bush adminstration officials are comspicuously intelligent; Rumsfeld isn't a moron, but compared to the rest of the crew it almost seems that way sometimes.

Actually, I'm sure he's heard about the documents being released, but is diplomatically refusing to confirm this particular conclusion. It would be nice if he could be clear about the distinction, though. Otherwise, he makes it too easy for Bush administration opponents to claim he's clueless.

Freeper jveritas, who was interviewed by the NYT and The Boston Globe for his work translating the documents, has a web site now with the help of someone.

You got it right Michael. Rummy is a great talker and always leaves it to your "interpretation". I always ask "what was he really saying? And ya know what, the government can give us disinformation because the enemy is always listening.

Having Iraq believe that Russia is helping them is just such a great plan.

So did Russia supply information to Iraq or disinformation?? :-)

They knew the Russians were screwing around a long time ago when the oil for food scandal broke. this is kind of old news, just supporting evidence.

I'm sure Rumsfeld knew what was going on. In fact at one of the Pentagon briefings shortly after the war started he mentioned something about Russian technology like night vision goggles being smuggled into Iraq because Saddam's forces were ill-equipped to fight on moonless nights.

You're right. The headline and the article are both misleading.
