Yes. Spending during a time of war IS permanent, because it is helping to keep us safe.

btw, there will be no LBJ legacy here...........the comparison falls flat because the spending, for example, in education involves conservative principles.......accountability and personal responsibility, and will, in the end, result in less dependence on government. The President's economic policies are most definitely NOT liberal, and will result in long term economic growth. The President's support of programs that encourage abstinence, the family and personal responsibility cannot be compared with the profligate and immoral spending of leftists, and his imprint on the moral direction of this country is also long term.

Now...........since this is a thread on Andy Card, and we are way off topic, and have been for a long time (since you came on the thread, I think), I'm opting out of this conversation.

Reagan spent far less, and the standardized test scores from Reagan's era and Bush time shows no improvement. What's more, many claim the standardized test have been dumbed down since Reagan. 80% increase is NOT conservative spending, nor is it conservative principles since the socialist Teachers Union and DOE itself remains a socialist organization, and stupid teachers are still teaching our kids.

btw, Standard Test Scores rising is significant. Why don't you just go back to test scores under LBJ? They were WAY higher than they are now. You gonna give him credit for that? Reversing sinking educational standards is extremely significant.

Bolten to Replace Card As Chief of Staff

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House chief of staff Andy Card has resigned and will be replaced by budget director Joshua Bolten, President Bush announced Tuesday amid growing calls for a White House shakeup and Republican concern about Bush's tumbling poll ratings.

Bush announced the changes in an nationally broadcast appearance in the Oval Office.

"I have relied on Andy's wise counsel, his calm in crisis, his absolute integrity and his tireless commitment to public service," Bush said. "The next three years will demand much of those who serve our country. We have a global war to fight and win."

Card, 58, stood stoically with his hands by his sides as Bush lauded his years of service through the Sept. 11 attacks, war and legislative and economic challenges. Gripping the podium, Card said in his farewell: "You're a good man, Mr. President." Card's eyes were watery. Card said he looks forward to just being Bush's friend. Bush then gave him five quick slaps on the back and the two walked out of the Oval Office together.

No it is not.

Andy Card is not the sole reason we have moved to the left fiscally under George Bush. Replacing Card will not cause this administration to shift gears and get fiscally conservative and pursue the old mantra of the GOP--limited government.

Being "stuck with Bush" is true. The man at the top will stay. I am not happy with his agenda, Peggy Noonan is not, Michelle Malkin is not, hundreds of conservative TV talk show and radio show hosts are not, hundreds of regional and national columnists are not and millions of conservatives are not, and thousands of FR members and lurkers are not happy with many parts of the Bush admin agenda.

Standard Test Scores rising is significant.

The quality of the average student coming out of high school today is lower than that from the Reagan years. The standardized test scores are no longer standardized...they have injected "social cultural modifications" into the tests, or in other words, dumbed them down.

The crazy, stratospheric increases in DOE waste has not caused a correlated increase in the quality of the students.

We don't expect perfection. But something better than complete ineptitude would be nice. How on earth is a spending record comparable to LBJ's a "good job"? How on earth is a near $600 billion deficit excusable? That's not a case of being imperfect... its complete failure.
