Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

especially the 29% who are hardworking thugs, rapists and murderers that are currently enjoying the hospitality offered during their incarceration in American prisons.

You are wrong. The US has about 2 million incarcerated. If 29% of illegals are incarcerated and 100% of the prison population were illegals, then the total illegal population would be 6 million.

30% of 6 million is about 1.8 million

Of course there are more than 6 million illegals and they do not constitute 100% of prisoners, therefore your statistic wrong.

"we're not going to get rid of the illegals that are here now"

A good start would have been to round up thousands that were "demanding" their rights around the country the last few days and send them back first.

Whether Frist intends to proceed with his bill remains unclear. (from a news report)

I expected the free traitor repub's would sellout America, no surprise here just extreme sadness to sit here watching the greatest country that ever was on this earth get balkanized and destroyed from within by its own leaders.

I mean the repubs, the President and Teddy Kennedy are as one on this!

Its over people! Your leaders are traitors!

A country gets the leaders it deserves. The USA is paying now for the sin of greed and the murder of millions of unborn. The politicians we have in DC, from the President on down, would sell their own mothers for a dime profit, they have zero conscience and could care less about anyone that has to work for a living in this country.

These are the last days of America I fear. Better teach your children to speak Spanish, it will become the new language in north America.

Wonder, if this passes, are all those orders for deportation void?

Isn't that like annulling a subpoena or court order? If so, what gives Congress the right to over-ride court orders? Isn't that, in essence, a breach of power?

Re #990, this is "nothing short of a radical effort to manipulate the constitutional separation of powers and evade accountability and responsibility for following the law."

Agree with you. I'd like to see the news cover the real facts about the economic impact of illegals too. I'm sick of hearing that illegals take jobs Americans don't want- the truth is a recent study proved that Americans without much education lost jobs to illegals and the unemployment for this group of Americans is 10-12%. This is due to illegal immigration taking the lower paid jobs Americans used to do. Another issue- our hospitals continue to run in the red due to illegals flooding into emergency rooms. Where is this in the news stories? I'd like to see a real uprising among Americans on this issue- unfortunately, we are preaching to the choir here and most Americans are watching sitcoms and have no idea we are losing the country.

Wrong. People like me who literally travelled 1000 miles away in 2004 to poll watch etc etc for the GOP, hit the Bronx pavement in 2000 to watch poll fraud, will simply not do it anymore.

As far as I am concerned, the GOP can rot in hell. They keep people like you in a "beaten wife" mentality and laugh all the way.

Screw em. Let the CEO's pushing this garbage go hit thew Bronx streets in 06 and 08.
