Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

I am fully in favor of HR 4437, but I am doing something to about it --- I am urging my state's congress persons to VOTE for it.

Do you really think they care about what you think? Seriously.

All your politicians care about is whether they get your votes are not in the upcoming election. Republicans have discovered that the only thing they have to do to get elected is to say "would you rather have a democrat?" and all of the party cheerleaders fall into line.

In between elections, they do anything they like. The cycle needs to end.

Respect is earned. You will never earn my respect.

Knowledge is gathered. You will remain dumb as a stump until the day you die.

I've been ticked at Frist ever since he rolled over and let Specter take the helm of Judiciary; this goes a long way towards vindicating him -- IF he sticks to his guns this time.

Hopefully, he'll do the right thing.

Yes, I understand, but it would follow that the flip side of the current law is that if you are illegal, then you should be sent back.

The laws that have been on the books for decades have to be enforced for that to happen.

I also understand that all parties concerned here are looking for shortcuts and votes!

Like I said, face-saving measures.

When I think of what it took me to be a proud US citizen in terms of resources (money, work, even study), it sickens me to think that now the governement would just hand those papers out like welfare checks!

My brother-in-law understands the process.  He came here from Denmark in search of his dream of private ownership, only to be sent through 2-year circlejerk with government buracracy.  INS finally got around to his paperwork and he finally obtained full citizenship, even though he was able to live and work here while renewing his greencard every 12 months. (he lived and worked for my father for the first two years he was here)

Now that he obtained full citizenship, he became my brother-in-law, bought a house, bought an 18-wheeler, and now contracts himself out to a shipping company by doing longhaul trucking to the lower 48 states and Canada.

The chaps just have marketable skills.

Soon it won't be long before democrat shysters like yourself are replaced by cheap Mexican socialist shysters. All Americans will benefit because divorce will now cost $20 bucks and billable hours will now cost $5.00.

Your post in reality is a word-for-word third person account from an unnamed source of a supposed speech Lamm made almost two years ago.

You should really represent it as such when you post it.

We need more wasting time around here.

Your post makes no sense, but as a non sequiter it has a certain pith.

This bill was voted out of the judiciary --- several steps before it goes to POTUS. (Gee, I thought you knew that)!

Um yeah, the fact that senate version pretty much mirrors Bush's platform for immigration has totally nothing to do with the Bushbots falling into line.

Note that I also mentioned party cheerleaders - they can be spotted a mile away by their mating call of "at least they're better than democrats"

The House would never go along with this version of the bill, anyway.

That is what I am counting on - write e-mails to all the Representives and call your states Reps. They will have to carry the water on this one cause the Senate are mostly RINOs. Vote them out when they come up - might as well be Dims they way they are voting!

I see you have confidence that Frist will stand by his bill. So be it. But either way, you agree with me that Frist's bill won't pass the Senate.

Absolutely. I believe Frist will stand by his bill, but the soft on crime and national security members of the Senate will gladly filibuster anything that will accomplish more than what we already have now.

I think we both understand how things work then.
The right way is harder but sure feels better at the end of the day!
Thanks for your posts.

Hellooooooooo, POTUS ran on GUEST WORKERS. Where have you been?

I don't have to like all things POTUS likes, and I don't.

Third party types are stopped at the door --- because they don't have seats inside. Peeping, weeping Tom's.
