WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.
After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.
The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.
"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.
In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.
That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.
LOL_ I believe you. I dont often listen to George Noory, (I think it's spelled differently). I like Art personally from the old days when his show was about politics. Never got "into" George's stuff.
First time I listened to Art Bell was back in 1989. In those days he was actually doing his show LIVE from 7:00p.m. West Coast time (7:00p.m. to Midnight was considered his pre-game show) until 6:00a.m. West Coast time.
Last I heard, this is a CONSERVATIVE forum, not a Republican party forum or a Bush forum.
Aren't you staying at home or voting democrat or third party?
Why do you continue to lie? Where did I say that i was staying home, voting democrat or third party? In fact, I have told you several times that intend to do none of those things.
Seriously, why are you so threatened that you have to resort to lying? I have told you many times that Republicans that govern like democrats don't get my vote. Unless you think that EVERY Republican governs as a Democrat then why would I stay home?
I specifically noted that I liked the job my representative is doing and will vote for him. Again, how is that staying home, voting democrat or third party? Have you ever considered that there are local elections as well?
also, just to pipe in....I'm not so sure the rallies were a good thing.
They set me off today, and some of the folks I spoke with were in a similar mood.
One friend put it bluntly when he said
"If they can block traffic and march in LA, then they can certainly keep marching their angry @sses back to Mexico".
I would submit that the images of screaming thugs waving Mexican flags did little to help the cause of the "poor illegals."
Art used to broadcast from atop Jackie Gaughn's Union Plaza in LV at KDWN, 720AM on the dial.
Immigration is a serious issue that needs to be fixed
But the left is also taking full advantage and exploiting it for all the can get
IMO .. level headed and clear thinking is what's needed on our side
The left has been watching us for some time and they know exactly what buttons to push
Don't call me a liar!
I "asked" you questions.
I did not state facts.
Please don't flatter yourself --- I do not read your posts.
You'll have to engage someone else. I am not interested in anything you have to say.
I agree. If anything, it energized the rest of the country who aren't globalists and believe in national sovereignty against the illegals.
The senators could have easily pointed to the mayhem that the illegals caused as evidence that the situation has become dangerous.
To learn English.
They saw yours and decided to let you run the day.
Yep! Before I went to college in the summer of 1989, I was listening to the audio feed of his show on the big backyard dish. I like having the radio on at night when I am in bed, so when I was in college, I'd listen to him on 910 KBLG (Billings, MT). Nowadays, I listen to his show on 1110 KFAB Omaha.
So you're saying that you post to me and ask a question, don't read the reply, and then just imply that I answered the way you want to hear.
I agree .. pictures can speak a thousand words
and not all of them will be good
How are they energized? Will they be holding similar demonstrations?
Good post. Mob rule is exactly what will get soon if the brakes aren't put on this situation.
I answered your silly question to me with questions of my own and you went ballistic. I am literally doubled over laughing at you. You needn't concern yourself why I am here. I have been here before you found this forum and I will likely be here long after you depart.
Some of us actually work on campaigns together and attend FR events and FReeps.
In Specter's case, the 'R' stands for Rasshole.
