Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

So, all those people sitting around emergency rooms waiting for treatment they won't pay for, are trial lawyers disguised as mexicans? Or mexican trial lawyers?

Ok, folks! What do we want to do about this? Do we just say, "It's too bad we lost our country?" or do we do something? That's the thing about FreeRepublic. I have seen how organized this group can be. I have seen how we can make a difference together. On the other hand, this isn't just a Conservative issue. There are many Liberals that are fed up with this too. Maybe it's time everyone got together to do something. Just where do we start?

And he is hiring all Bush's people to ramrod his run for the big house in '08. If he gets elected or Hillary gets elected, I give up on this country. The inmates will be running the place.

Howie Carr on WRKO radio this afternoon, quoted a Harvard study which found that one third of illegal immigrants are on welfare. This new 'forgiveness' nonsense, 'don't make it a felony', will simply encourage more hordes of illegals. They're bleeding us white, and too many have an agenda which doesn't include assimilation. They want Mexico's border moved north to Canada.

And Putin. Don't forget Putin -- looked into his eyes and saw his soul.

That criticism of the President is lame.

Bush actions on Georgia, The Ukraine and even Chechnya have been a poke in the eye for Putin.

But you believe it.

No they where Armani suits, file frivolous lawsuits, push up health care costs for all, and advertise during the jerry springer show whose audience is basically welfare bums.

It does, but then they'd go for our throats. Foreign nationals do things and they look the other way. We do things and they throw us in prison or liquide our properties.

In this debate it is said often, we couldn't kick the illegals out of their homes. Sheesh, it hasn't been a problem kicking citizens out of their homes or off their farms.

Why is it that we're treated like third-cousins and illegals are treated by a wholely different set of rules?

By God, it looks as if our leaders think they are the citizens and we're the criminals.

Well, it won't happen overnight as his post sounded. But combine this 11 million (at least) with the 3-4 million that Reagan granted de facto amnesty to...with the 10 or so million over the next decade, with the falling birth rate of Americans, and in two decades you do in fact have a voting bloc in this country that will very closely resemble that of Mexico City. We have already been invaded. We are being sold out by our representatives. It is very much the end of the nation as we have known it, but it will be a slow, drawn out letting of the blood, not a hemorrhage. But hey, if some Americans make a hefty profit because of the cheap labor, then that makes it all right. Because it's all about the buck, right?

I'm for a guest worker program, but they must leave the country and get in the back of the line for citizenship.

If someone is already here, and working, in some vague legal status, why in the world would he uproot himself, and maybe a family, leave the country, and file paperwork to see if he can get back in? Especially when he is by definition too much of a lowlife chickenshit to file for citizenship in the first place?

That's very interesting. Kennedy said today that 98% of "the men" here illegally are "working."

>>>>Did the amnesty in 1986 stop illegal immigration?

No it didn't. It gave 2.5 million illegals a free pass to US citizenship. If the employer sanction provisions had been enforced, we wouldn't be looking at making the same mistake one more time. Except today, at minimum, there are 12-15 million illegals in the US. In 1986 that was 1% of the population. Today its 5%, or more.

I'm hardly an anti-American Republican. The key words in this article regarding the three Republicans who sided with the Democrats are "Seeking Re-election".

They're not voting for what the people want. They're not even voting for what's in the best interest of America - They're voting for what's going to keep their sorry asses in office.

What you do describe is a contradiction. The Senators are "seeking re-election" -- the Senators are "not voting for what the people want".

How do you reconcile that?

Oh yes, and watch the Hispanic Gang Graffiti and the Hispanic gang killings go up in this country also. Hispanic gangs have flooded Metro Atlanta, especially Gwinnett County. Take a ride up and down Jimmy Carter Blvd below Interstate 85 up and down Buford Hwy near I-285 and you will understand what I speak of.
