Freerepublic banned in Argentina (vanity)

Posted on 03/26/2006 1:38:50 PM PST by Cementjungle

This may not be of interest to many, but I found it interesting. I´m on vacation in Argentina (Buonos Aires) and have found that FreeRebublic is banned at many of the Internet Cafes.

Fortunately, I can use Remote Desktop to get to my PC at home and browse from there.

I also tried democraticunderground.com, and that does work. What did FreeRepublic.com ever do to Argentina?!

Better question might be, 'What are you doing in Argentina, comrade?'

Vacation! I used to travel here often for work (I set up the Nielsen office here). I am now friends with the woman who runs the Nielsen office here. My wife loves to shop, and the dollar is strong here so she´s in heaven. Besides, it´s a taste of summer which is welcome about now.

Do you remember the French st one? Dont know what is going on here but, the cafes would be a good place to start if you wanted to implement infrastructure.

I´m staying at French 2927. I´t about 1 block from here. There are many Internet cafes here, but few with Windows XP which I need for using Remote Desktop. It´s early now (midnight) so they´re all full of teenagers playing games and using chat programs.

The Argentinan elite are Italians who speak Spanish, think they're British, and act like Frenchmen.
Classic!

I made the mistake of telling my fave Argentine joke to a group that included, unbeknownst to me, an Argentine... "How does an Argentine commit suicide... climb up his ego and jumps off."

She was unamused.

What did the front of the cafe look like? Did the owner give you a reason why it was blocked?

I didn´t talk to the owner, as my Spanish is very poor. The booths use records (old LP´s) as decoration seperating the workstations. The front door was unremarkable, just glass with the usual Ïnternet, Chat, and words like that painted on the glass. I´ll try to spot it again before I leave and see what the exact address is.

I tried to get a screenshot, but it pops up with a ¨Forbidden¨message for about 2 seconds then it closes the browser and the message goes away too fast to catch. But, I can get FreeRepublic everywhere else I try, so it seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Maybe there was some bad word it spotted to trigger that.

!! Argentina arrogance is well-known throughout Latin America.

In fact, there was a clergyman who was threatened with discipline for always talking down the Argentinans. He promised to behave, until the Easter sermon:

"And so Jesus said to his disciples: 'One of you will betray me.' And he looked at Judas, who began, 'Cheee...'"

He could just post some nudes on the front page. We promise not to look.

If it was Helen the Sea Hag you would be right.

(My apologies to those eating lunch)

Believe it or not, Argentina (with the prodding of Chavez) has started making noise about the Falklands again. This time, the UK may not be able to get down there...on their own. I have a feeling we will jump into it to help our allies.

Are the Argentines really that stupid? What did they expect, a submarine skipper to pass up sinking a large warship? The first such event since the end of WW2. Why did they find that so shocking anyway, it was and is a purely military act?

If it was Helen the Sea Hag you would be right.

That would definitely get it banned in Argentina, and probably everywhere else.

I doubt it is the ISP, more likely it is the software the café uses to filter out porn etc. I live in Argentina and have had service from two of the biggest ISPs in the country and I have never had problems accessing the site.

I am in Turkey at the moment
and I notice Michelle Malkin's blog is not available.

She seems to have made some enemies in the Middle East.
