Freerepublic banned in Argentina (vanity)

Posted on 03/26/2006 1:38:50 PM PST by Cementjungle

This may not be of interest to many, but I found it interesting. I´m on vacation in Argentina (Buonos Aires) and have found that FreeRebublic is banned at many of the Internet Cafes.

Fortunately, I can use Remote Desktop to get to my PC at home and browse from there.

I also tried democraticunderground.com, and that does work. What did FreeRepublic.com ever do to Argentina?!

While you're there, see if you can get "Frugal forums .com.
They have some interesting posts about the meltdown there.

BTW, How was Argentina? Is their economy any better than it was a couple of years ago? Have any Maté while you were there?

It´s getting better now, 3 pesos to the dollar. About 2 years ago after the crash it was about 10 to the dollar. The leather products are fantastic, my wife and I have bought several nice jackets and coats for about $100 each. In the US these would easily be about $800 to $1200 each. It´s still the end of summer here, so it´s hot but nice. The Internet Cafe´s are all 1 Peso per hour (about 0.30).

FR is definitely available in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Greece. I'm guessing its available in most other European countries also.

What did FreeRepublic.com ever do to Argentina?!

Well I suspect it might have something to do with the fact that most Freepers consider themselves ideologically aligned with the UK, so far as the WOT is concerned. Despite his domestic policies, most of us like Tony Blair, and I would daresay that the majority of us wish that Margaret Thatcher could have somehow been Ronald Reagan's vice-presidential choice instead of GHWB, and because of our love for Lady Thatcher, who cleaned the clock of the foolhardy Argentinians when they tried to seize the Falkland Islands, I would say all of those puzzle pieces when fitted together create a picture which isn't to the liking of Argentina, who will most likely never get over the sinking of the General Belgrano by the British sub HMS Conqueror(S48).

I probably do just using larger font size. Though I may have an unfair advantage, finding things like that in documents is part of my paid full-time job.

If you Google "free republic" and press "I'm Feeling Lucky", what do you get?

My advice is forget the FR sticker unless you want a taste of South American justice admionistered by everyone from the trash handling your bags to the crypto-Nazi in the resplendent uniform carrying the crude club.

That part of the world is no place to expect American levels of free expression. And if the Democraps get in, forget it here as well.

Have we all written our CongressCritters about the McCain/Sweingold attack on the internet?

Did you change money before you left, or when you got there? I am going to Argentina in 2 weeks and would like to know.

Have fun, be safe,

I don't know, but I heard we were banned in Boston too. Must be a pretty bad site.

You've been kicked out of better places than Argentina Jim. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

In fact, people were very friendly, but as mentioned earlier, the Falken's incident was still a touchy subject.

Sometimes, in the quest for the quick, cheap laugh, FReepers upset the geopolitical balance of the hemisphere.

I've NEVER done that! I always attempt world disruption.
