GLAM GAL: "You only do prom once, and I've been planning this for over a year," says Brooklyn 17-year-old Jenna Cossuto. Photo: Graham Morrison
Jenna Cossuto spent $2,400 on her custom-made dress. She'll rent a 22-seat stretch Hummer to transport her closest friends to privately booked Gotham Hall. And then it's off to the swanky South Street Seaport at Bridgewater and afterward, a party in Crobar's VIP section before a long weekend in a Hamptons beach house.
But this once-in-a-lifetime weekend isn't for Cossuto's wedding. It's for this 17-year-old's senior prom.
She's part of a growing generation of teens who think of prom as the end all, be all of their young lives. "Teens think of prom as their Oscar night. They want to look and feel like celebrities," says Gina Kelly, fashion director at Seventeen magazine.
According to a Seventeen prom survey, girls spend an average of $833 for dress, shoes and accessories......(and) shell out $135 on beauty products, $105 at the salon and $206 for tickets and limos.
"I'm not sure exactly how much I'll spend, but probably thousands and thousands," said Cossuto. If she gets all she wants, the total will exceed $10,000. "My parents are just happy that I saved up myself for the dress, and they'll obviously help me pay for everything else I need."
Beyond the designer Jovani dress, which includes multi-carat Chopard diamonds, Cossuto got $550 Gucci shoes, a matching handbag, tanning sessions, eyebrow shaping and professional hair and makeup for the big day, June 7.
The only thing she hasn't nailed down? A date. "I don't care about that as much," said the teen, who will go to college at Florida International University in Miami. "I'll have one, but I don't want to make the wrong decision."

What a dope. She and, I guess, her peers have bought into this hype--and everyone is laughing their way to the bank, except she and whomever else for pissing away money like this. It's a frickin' prom! Who cares!? It's a one night mean nothing deal. A chance to blow your money. Suckers!
Ugly dress, too. /meow
I hope she gets thrown in the pool at the post-prom party, and the dress comes off, and the poor schmuck she turned down for the prom gets high-resolution pictures of her in all her dripping wet naked glory, and posts them on the internet. |
Hey, that's what I'd do...
I wonder if this princess is setting herself up for a fall. Her parents made her pay for her own dress, and she does not seem overly confident the parents are paying for the rest of her self indulgent idiocy. It would be pretty funny of Dad read this article and had a long talk with his princess about the other $7,500 she need to save before prom night.
..and my dress probably came from JC Penneys or Sears :) ---I can still describe it in detail.
My curfew after the prom......midnight :)
BTW, it was a wonderful night ....in a very sweet & proper manner of speaking.
And four years later, I married the guy who took me :)

Yes, they should think again; but then, probably by graduation, these boys have figured it out. . .
Dress, shoes, handbag, tanning salon, hair; make-up. . .limo. . .the essentials for 'prom' have been prioritized. . .
. . .prom and beyond, no doubt.
I see examples of this young woman, in grown-up form, every day. These are completely self-obsessed young women and we have a million of them already running around this country. Heaven help anyone who tries to tell them, "No."
This is probably Jenna's father:

Brooklyn lawyer Mark Cossuto charges $1,000 a pop for a DWI case and getting his clients' records sealed.
Cossuto has plea-bargained and sealed 29 cases of drunken driving in the last 12 years - the biggest tally of DWI sealing cases of any lawyer in the state.
One of Cossuto's clients, Kenneth LaBarre, 57, a general contractor, flunked a sobriety test during an August 1997 traffic stop at the Battery Tunnel after he said he'd had a drink with dinner.
LaBarre was thrilled to learn his DWI bust would be sealed. He had nothing but praise for Cossuto.
"He was the greatest lawyer I ever met," LaBarre said. "He was a godsend to me."
Cossuto angrily refused comment.
"I'll have one, but I don't want to make the wrong decision."
LOL!! It's pretty obvious that she can't make a decision about anything. Who decides to blow 10k on NOTHING!? If she could even make a prudent decision, she could decide to put that cash in a mutual fund--or something that has the potential to grow in value rather than a bunch of cloth that will rot. What a waste.
PJ barf in its purple glory would add a colorful blotch to the orange hued background.

Years ago, I worked with a woman that fits your description. She bragged on her money, her parents money, her credit cards, etc. If she didn't get her way at work, she went out on disability. I found out recently that she was turned down for a management position that she wanted, she left her husband and he won custody of the kids, she committed suicide.
The parents of the girl in this prom story aren't doing their daughter any favors.

no, but it's still funny -- in a dark and pathetic kind of way.
"no, but it's still funny -- in a dark and pathetic kind of way."
That's true.
$10,000 on a prom??? I don't know who disgusts me more in this story, the girl or her parents.
I never judge, but I takes my laughs where I find them.
Nothing like teaching their kids values.
pathetic prom ping
That is sad. Our daughter is going this year and will probably end up spending about $150 total.
