Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.

Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.

Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.

"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.

Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

Ever heard of Blanche Moore? This lovely lady, currently sitting on death row, poisoned two men to death, one a husband the other a boyfriend. She was found out when she tried to poison her second husband the Rev. Dwight Moore. He lived to testify against her at her trial.

Guess all those men in her life, including her own father, that she is believed to have also poisoned to death, were all evil men, responsible for their own deaths. After all, there must have been a reason these horrible men forced her into murdering them.

after looking at the family picture and seeing how unresponsive (sad) the middle girl and the baby were

It's just a snapshot. Probably the picture taker did not try to get the baby to smile, and the middle girl could just be tired. I've got plenty of childhood snapshots of me with a grumpy, tired or numb look on my face.

SELMER, Tenn. - The wife of a minister found shot to death in their church's parsonage agreed Friday to return to Tennessee to face first-degree murder charges in his death, authorities said.

Mary Winkler was found with the couple's three young daughters late Thursday in Orange Beach, Ala., 340 miles south of their home.

Orange Beach Assistant Chief of Police Greg Duck said Friday she had waived extradition and would be sent back to Tennessee later in the day or on Saturday. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent John Mehr said authorities were charging her with murder in her husband's death after interviewing her during the night.

Of course it will. When you shoot someone in the back your only defense is a "he made me do it".

The vigilante mentality on FR astounds me sometimes. I don't care what her motives were. He was shot in the back. IF she is indeed guilty she's a cold-blooded killer and worse than anything he might have done. Period.

I'm just wondering how long it will take the Andrea Yates apologists/fan club here to blame the dead husband?

But I am speculating . . . . (I think this is called "idle gossip", so I'll shut up.)

LOL, that is what FR is all about. Enjoy!

I know someone from TN, and there are a lot of Church of Christ churches down there. I've heard that denomination is just a tad "off" as far as being insular, requiring people to marry within the denomination, etc., kinda like a cult would. (I'm not calling Church of Christ a cult, but it has some of that flavor according to this person I know.)

As for post-partum depression, from what I understand it is due to hormonal imbalance. When a woman gives birth, the levels of progesterone plummet dramatically. It is NOT feeling a little blue. Hormones can have a huge effect on the brain. Back in the 1800s they used to put menopausal women in institutions because they thought these women were nuts. We're not nuts! It's the hormones!

I also think there are known cases of people on anti-depressants killing, either themselves or others. I personally don't trust the big drug companies or the FDA to keep us healthy and safe. Remember Vioxx?

Police spotted her as she left a Waffle House around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after picking up a carryout order, Duck said. The children were in the car with her at the time.

A custody hearing was scheduled Friday afternoon in Foley, Ala., where a juvenile Court judge will decide whether Matthew Winkler's parents can take custody of the three children, Duck said."

Maybe we could just wait until the facts are known before we jump to such conclusions. You know, in the interest of fairness and truth and all that stuff.

Party pooper!

My money is on either he was physically abusive to wife or sexually molesting daughter(s). Thoughts?

That is highly unfair for ANY human being to have to be labeled before a trial.Try to control your thoughts ....not every human being is a bad molester .

Wife Confesses To Killing Husband, Preacher
Posted: 3/24/2006 11:01:00 AM
Updated: 3/24/2006 11:19:38 AM

The TBI found Mary Winkler in Alabama with her three children. Officials spent the night talking with her, and she did confess to killing him earlier in the week.

Mary Winkler and the three girls disappeared from Selmer right before the body of Mathew Winkler was found. His body was found in the bedroom of their home by church members.

The TBI put out a statewide amber alert but didn't get many calls. Investigators figured out she was heading to southern Alabama. That’s where a state trooper spotted her and the family min-van alongside the road. He went up to the van and saw that they were all okay.

“She’s been extremely forth coming. We just got the warrant a few minutes ago. So I now have it in hand, and I can say that she did basically confess to this. Once she was apprehended-- actually she was really taken in for questioning more than anything else because initially we didn’t know what was going on --but she has basically confessed to this, so we had to move forward.” said Jennifer Johnson with the TBI.

The warrant for murder charges was taken out in McNairy County. She will be taken back there after the warrant is served to her in Alabama.

The children are in the custody of the state of Alabama. There will be a hearing Friday afternoon where a juvenile court judge will determine whether the parents of shooting victim, Matthew Winkler, should take custody of the children."
