Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton invoked Jesus to argue against a House immigration bill that would make illegal presence in the United States a felony.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures," Clinton said, according to the Associated Press, "because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."
Clinton delivered her remarks as the Senate prepared to take up a version of the measure, which passed the House in December.
Unlawful presence in the U.S. currently is a civil offense.
Flanked by New York immigration activists, Clinton called the bill "mean-spirited" and inconsistent with Republicans' professed support for faith and values, the AP said.
Clinton said she hoped the Senate Judiciary Committee would come up with a compromise that would remove the House's severe penalties.
The New York senator said, however, she would back legislation to strengthen U.S. borders and seek more cooperation with Mexico and other neighboring countries.
She also wants to establish a way for the nation's approximately 11 million illegal immigrants to gain citizenship.
While recognizing the distress illegal immigration causes border communities, Clinton insisted Republicans are taking a great political risk in pushing the House bill forward.
"We want the outcome to be that they're on the wrong side of the politics as well as the wrong side of history and American values," she said.
As WorldNetDaily reported, a bill that would give millions of illegal aliens in the United States the opportunity to earn citizenship advanced last week when members of the Senate Judiciary Committee signaled likely passage of a proposal by Sens. Edward Kenney, D-Mass., and John McCain, R-Ariz.
Though a committee vote will not be held until after a week-long congressional recess, likely March 27, committee members appeared ready to back the Kennedy-McCain bill.
Would Jesus come here illegaly?
I think it's a sign of the rubbish to come.
Forgive me, but I don't believe Hilary Clinton knows Jesus.
I'm glad she uses incoherent rhetoric. It will help us in two years when we will be exposing Democrats as fractured and incapable of rational leadership.
Wait. The big question is here:
How can she say this:
It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures
Without the ACLU calling for her head, because she invoked religion? And since when, according to the left, does religion become an ok thing in gov't????
Excellent campaign fodder . Thanks Hitlary , we will be sure to use it in a campaign ad against you ...LOL !
LOL! What Spin! Holy Crap!
the only Jesus she knows is pronounced - "Hay-Seuss"
I wonder if Hillary has ever heard of the term, "Render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's."
One meaning of that phrase is that people should not rebel against their government. If that government is at all reasonable, and I think it's clear the Roman Empire wasn't always, Jesus was saying that people should still respect it where they could.
Do illegal immigrants respect the laws of our nation? Do they render unto Caesar that which is Ceasar's? As a matter of fact they steal as much as they can off Caesar.
Hillary, don't quit your day job. On second thought, please do!
she's running for president on a 'secure the borders' platform... of course it is unlikely she will consider actually doing it if she is elected but she will run on this platform, mark my words.
Hillary Clinton's way of honoring Jesus is to fund partial-birth abortions, oppose faith-based organizations which help damaged people to get their lives on track, evade taxes, hire private investigators to bully & blackmail her political enemies, and lie about everything.
Here, and she thought that Bible was just for putting on top of that stack of FBI files to keep them pressed nice and neat.
The difference between what Bush proposed and Hillary proposed is significant. Whereas Bush's proposal was to legitimize the presence of illegals already present in the United States, but restrict their ability to upgrade their status to seek citizenship, Hillary's proposal is to bypass "Go" and go straight to citizenship.
Yes, there are problems with what Bush proposed, but those problems are a matter of cost. It would cost an immense amount to round up illegals, detain them, and then deport them to their countries of origin. The attempt would create a huge underground railroad of illegals avoiding Immigration agents, paying exorbitant fees to professionals who will hide them, feeding organized crime and possibly creating a market for Islamic extremist ideology among the illegals.
The best method of dealing with the illegals is to give them work visas without the possibility of naturalization unless they return to their country of origin and apply for a visa through normal channels. Of course, this only works if the borders are closed and a time limit is imposed after which illegals found in country will be deported. The solution to illegal immigration has to be comprehensive, with an eye on the consequences of every step. Hillary's solution is nothing more than an attempt to create a voter base of non-english speaking, poor, welfare cases.
I think she borrowed the Book of Job from Howard.
"Forgive me, but I don't believe Hilary Clinton knows Jesus."
Hillary needs to know that Jesus is going to tell her, "Depart from me I never knew you."
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures, ...."
That is your first problem, Hildebeast. You don't understand the Scriptures.
No brainer. All they have to do for citizenship is to go back to Mexico and be good citizens.
If he pronounces it "Hay-zoos".
