Mrs. Clinton Says G.O.P.'s Immigration Plan Is at Odds With the Bible

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the Bible yesterday to criticize a stringent border security measure that, among other things, would make it a federal crime to offer aid to illegal immigrants.

"It is hard to believe that a Republican leadership that is constantly talking about values and about faith would put forth such a mean-spirited piece of legislation," she said of the measure, which was passed by the House of Representatives in December and mirrored a companion Senate bill introduced last week by Senator Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and the majority leader.

"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scripture because this bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself," she said. "We need to sound the alarm about what is being done in the Congress."

Mrs. Clinton, who is running for re-election this year and is leading in polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, spoke at a news conference in Manhattan with more than 30 immigrant leaders after meeting with them privately.

The meeting took place in an atmosphere of mounting urgency, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called on its flock to oppose the measure, and tens of thousands of immigrants around the country stepped up a series of protest rallies in anticipation of a Senate vote on competing immigration bills next week.

Mr. Frist's bill, like the House measure, would make it a crime to be in the United States without proper papers and would add guards and fencing along the Mexican border, and speed deportation.

Some versions, including one proposed by Senator Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, would expand the definition of alien smuggling to include help to illegal immigrants already here.

NO.

Now do you think Churches should be allowed to hide lawbreakers for the express purpose of hiding them from law enforcement?Yes or No.

Basically, feed the hungry without asking immigration status? Yes. Hide illegals set for deportation in your Church's basement to keep them from deportation? No

The day a Democrat talks about a Republican proposal without using the phrase "mean-spirited" - I think I'll stand on my head and whistle Dixie while eating saltine crackers!

Here in Michigan during the 8 years that John Engler was governor - I think I heard that phrase at least 7 billion times.

"The only thing that spawn of Satan knows about the Bible is hitting conservatives over the head with it."

The ONLY time she has SEEN a Bible is when she had to put her hand on one before a GRAND JURY....then proceeded to LIE after doing so....

Paul and Jesus were pretty direct and straightforward on this issue ;-)

Whew! Someone finally answered the question!!!!!

I think I already said the Church should not hide the person who killed 1000 children, but now that you ask it about an illegal alien who has done nothing else wrong, I will have to review the Church's policy on sanctuary first.

"Help" = "feed" (for now - I will continue to see where you draw the line).

Catholic church is hemoraging members so its leaders have a monetary interest in increasing Latin American immigration, legal or not.

I agree. I'm Catholic but when I read this I decided no more money from me. It's bad enough when my tax dollars are used to help criminals but there is no way I'm just going to give it to the church or their charities so they can set-up programs like this in conjunction with ICE.

The diocese also is working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to obtain certification that will allow Catholic Charities to help immigrants navigate the legal system, said Bill Hoey, vice president of Catholic Charities. The diocese will not necessarily provide immigrants with lawyers, but will help file paperwork and answer questions about citizenship, he said.

"Why is it up to the Church to send them back? Do you expect the Church to investigate and prosecute murders too? I (not "FormerLib") will ask the question over and over until someone answers it."

Because it is expected that the Church and its members will obey the law of the country. "If" they become aware that the person or persons they are helping are illegal immigrants, then they have a duty to report them to the relevant authorities. The ONLY exception to this is the "seal of the confessional".

The Church is supposed to spread the Gospel and "love our neighbor as ourself" - and if that conflicts with one of man's laws, which do you think we are supposed to obey?

Hillary trying to use the Bible and scripture to further her cause is laughable!

But, some here feel it is O.K. for the Church to help out in that way, as long as they are doing it the LEGAL way. Why would that not be an acceptable compromise?

I agree it is laughable, considering I disagree with her on everything else, but not that she's wrong.

We obey God's law, and then willingly face the penalty for disobeying man's law. It's been that way since the Church was founded.

If the church or church members disobey civil law, they should face the same penalty as anyone else. The idea that churches and church members "get a free ride" against the law is bullsh*t.

Who said anything about a free ride?! If this law is passed, I fully expect Mahony to go to jail, and become a huge political PR nightmare for those like Tancredo.

The real issue is not immigration reform, it is law enforcement. We do have laws against illegal immigration. Liberals are very find of the "law enforcement" argument on terrorism, why not here?

Just a semi-sarcastic guess...but cracking down on illegals restricts their voter base. Cracking down on terrorists keeps their (illegal)voter base alive.

It depends on what "helping" entails. There is an enormous difference between providing hot meals to people and signing them up for food stamps, and an enormous difference between giving people shelter and signing them up for Section 8 housing.
