Aloha T!
The more I view the pics of the cliff dwellers the more I think of defensive entrenchments.
Your thread is fascinating though.....history's puzzle.

Good job, t. Amazing what builders of yore were able to accomplish.

For The Ladies Of The Canteen
What's In A Name?
My Human calls me "Cushion", but my Mother named me "Gretel"
A fine healthy Kitten, plump and fettle
Of the Honored Blood Line, Russian Blue
Looking forward to a long life of wondrous things to do
Mother gave birth to us in the Pretty One's dark Clothes Place
Feeding us each before a grooming from tail to face
To nap away days in the silky darkness without a trace
Until the Pretty One discovered me in the toe of one of her narrow shoes
My eyes were just starting to open and I could hazily see
Mother glaring at the Pretty One defiantly
With her back coiled and crouched, ready to bound
When the Pretty One made the most odd and trilling sounds
The Pretty One quietly retreated, but was hardly defeated
Leaving a bowl of milk for Mother by the sliding door
To help feed Mother and her newborn Kittens four
Until Mother carried us all outside for our first Grand Tour
My two brothers, sister and I filled the air with tiny Mews
Which brought the Pretty One responding to the news
Who gently picked each one of us up without a threat or pushin'
My silky cheek brushed hers. Then she smiled and called me "Cushion"!
