BUSH:IRAQ UP TO THE NEXT GUY (Rocky Mountain News Headline)

----------------------------

Bush: Iraq pullout a choice for a later President

(MSNBC HEADLINE for same AP Story by Terrence Hunt) Amid public unease, president suggests U.S. troops will stay through 2008

Updated: 9:59 p.m. ET March 21, 2006 WASHINGTON - President Bush said Tuesday the decision about when to withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq will fall to future presidents and Iraqi leaders, suggesting that U.S. involvement will continue at least through 2008.

Acknowledging the public’s growing unease with the war — and election-year skittishness among fellow Republicans — the president nonetheless vowed to keep U.S. soldiers in the fight.

“If I didn’t believe we could succeed, I wouldn’t be there. I wouldn’t put those kids there,” Bush declared.

I believe each News outlet puts its own title/headline on AP stories. I have noticed a repeated problem with the editors at the RMN headlining storys in a misleading and dishonest fashion. They ran a headline 'Sandra Day O'Conner disapointed with Roberts choice for Supreme Court'. The actual AP report had her saying that Roberts was very qualified and being supportive. In the second paragraph she said something about wishing Bush had chosen a woman. Every time I try and contact the Managing Editor -Deb Goeken, and complain I get no responce. The editor Mr. Temple writes a phony column every week, about how fair they try to be and what high standards they have. Maybe some of you would have better luck, complaining than I have had. Maybe she needs to hear from some more people. goekend@rockymountainnews.com 303-892-5443

Media LIES!

Bush never said troops would not leave before the end of his term. He said he would not provide a timetable.

Yet, all the headlines today seem to be about this topic.

Here's what Bush said, in context:

QUESTION: Sir, you said earlier today that you believe there's a plan for success. If you did not, you would pull the troops out.

And so my question is, one, is there a point at which having the American forces in Iraq becomes more a part of the problem than a part of the solution? Can you say that you will not keep American troops in there is they're caught in a crossfire and a civil war? And can you say to the American people -- assure them that there will come a day when there will be no more American forces in Iraq?

The decisions about our troop levels will be made by General Casey and the commanders on the ground. They're the ones who can best judge whether or not the presence of coalition troops create more of a problem than a solution -- than be a part of the solution.

Secondly, I've answered the question on civil war -- our job is to make sure that civil war doesn't happen, but there will be -- but if there is sectarian violence, that's the job of the Iraqi forces, with coalition help, to separate those sectarian forces.

Third part of your question?

QUESTION: It was: Will there come a day -- and I'm not asking you when; I'm not asking for a timetable -- will there come a day when there will be no more American forces in Iraq?

BUSH: That, of course, is an objective. And that will be decided by future presidents and future governments of Iraq.

QUESTION: So it won't happen on your watch?

BUSH: You mean a complete withdrawal? That's a timetable.

I can only tell you that I will make decisions on force levels based upon what the commanders on the ground say.

Same sentiment granted but the wording of the RMN article is beyong the pale that's why I wanted to see it.

I took the headline from the actual Newspaper I did not find it on their web site.
My focus is the deliberately misleading headline not the story itself.

My complaint is that one(or more) of the editors at the RMN has a habit of taking AP wire stories and slapping a headline on them that totally distorts the actual story.

Another example form a couple years ago, an editor changed a local reporters story from "FBI Investigation" to "FBI Inquisition" when I called and complained to the reporter, they told me that their original story used the term 'investigation' but that her editor had changed it to 'inquisition'.

Since we are still in Japan and Germany I fail to see why the media is hyperventilating over the President's statement.

To say nothing of South Korea!

Sounds good to me. I would hope that the US military would maintain bases in Iraq and Afghanistan indefinitely.

The linked MSNBC story does not refer to "the next guy." The headline refers to "the next President." Where did the word guy come from?

So when do the oil reparations start to flow? Or have we just hung another country's welfare around our necks forever? We've got to stop babysitting defective Moos for free all over the world.

If I had the President's ear, I would advise that he not refer to the troops in harm's way as "kids". But alas, I don't, so I won't.

"Where do we send the bill?"

Same place we've been "sending" it as we've maintained bases around the world for decades, keeping a military presence in readiness to provide for OUR NATIONAL DEFENSE.

It's called looking out for our own best interests.

Bingo! It's too bad that no one in the media nor the RNC or the WH ever bothers to mention this.
