China warns against flexible use of US troops in Northeast Asia

SEOUL (AFX) - China's top envoy to South Korea has expressed concern that US troops based here could be deployed elsewhere in the region under a new Seoul-Washington accord.

Chinese Ambassador Ning Fukui told a security forum that the role of some 32,000 US troops based in the peninsula must be limited to providing security for South Korea.

'If they work in a bilateral framework, we can understand it. But if they act against a third party, we cannot but pay attention to it,' Ning said at a forum held by the Korean Institute of Defense Analyses.

Ning did not name which country he was referring to as a third party, but tension between Taiwan and China has been a source of concern here.

'We hope all parties concerned should not do anything to undermine peace and stability in Northeast Asia,' the Chinese envoy said, according to Agence France-Presse.

In January, Seoul and Washington issued a joint announcement approving a policy of 'strategic flexibility' whereby US troops stationed on the peninsula may be deployed to other parts of the region.

South Korean officials have expressed concern that Seoul could be drawn into a regional conflict under the new US strategy.

However Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon today said this was unlikely to happen if this was 'against the South Korean people's will.'

Under a mutual defense treaty, 650,000 South Korean troops, backed by American forces, have been confronting North Korea's 1.1-mln-strong army on the peninsula since the 1950-1953 Korean War.

Maybe they are planning on making a move on Taiwan hehe. I doubt it though. Probably just posturing, it's all about diplomacy, you got to have something to negotiate and bargain with.

For the life of me, I still don't know why they didn't move on Taiwan when BJC was President. That was their golden opportunity.

Clinton sent in carriers. Clinton has Taiwanese interests too. I doubt China will invade Taiwan by force. If it does it will be fighting guerillas for at least 20 years. Rather, if it waits out, Taiwan can become integrated without firing a shot. The latter is an infinitely better option.

They're warning that when they move on Taiwan that our troops in South Korea could be targets too.

two carrier groups would make that a costly idea for the Chinese.....and chances are we would be sending more than 2 carrier groups to the region...

After 2008, when Ma Ying-jeou becomes elected Taiwanese president (if he runs that is), the threat of Taiwanese independence will be gone. Potential for conflict in Taiwan will be greatly reduced. No one wants war, most certainly not the Taiwanese. They stand the most to lose.

What is that traditional reply the Chinese use?... Oh yeah...

This is an internal affair of the U.S. and South Korean governments and is none of your business.

I don't think this is about Taiwan. Look north. And I'm not talking about the headcase in North Korea. I don't know what Lebensraum is in Chinese, but the Russians better get ready for it.

Lebensraum is

in Chinese and Japanese (literally: "existential space").

Russians got nukes though. They might solve the Chinese overpopulation problem in a different way. I highly doubt China will expand there other than through economic migration.

China is not going into Russia, for obvious reasons. China is going to strike east and southwest, and maby invade Australia (if India does not behave the way the SCO wants it to)
