"Intelligent design" legislation in New York reborn
National Center for Science Education ^ | 21 March 2006 | Staff

Assembly Bill 8036 is back. Originally introduced on May 3, 2005, the bill would have required that "all pupils in grades kindergarten through twelve in all public schools in the state ... receive instruction in both theories of intelligent design and evolution." It also charged New York's commissioner of education to assist in developing curricula and local boards of education to provide "appropriate training and curriculum materials ... to ensure that all aspects of the theories, along with any supportive data, are fully examined through such course of study."

NCSE previously reported that the bill died in committee when the New York State Assembly's legislative session ended on June 24, 2005. But apparently not: on January 4, 2006, the bill was again referred to the House Committee on Education, where, after two amendments, it remains. The main difference is that the bill now would require pupils to receive instruction in "all aspects of the controversy surrounding evolution and the origins of man," including but not limited to "intelligent design and information effectively challenging the theory of evolution."

Both ID and effective challenges? What would the effective challenges be?

They don't know the difference between My Money and Their Money, so how in the world can they know the difference between a Theory and a Myth?

...so how in the world can they know the difference between a Theory and a Myth?

How about this theory?

Norse Creation Story

In the beginning there was the void. And the void was called Ginnungagap. What does Ginnungagap mean? Yawning gap, beginning gap, gap with magical potential, mighty gap; these are a few of the educated guesses. Along with the void existed Niflheim the land of fog and ice in the north and Muspelheim the land of fire in the south. There seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether or not these existed after Ginnungagap or along side of it from the beginning.

In Niflheim was a spring called Hvergelmir from which the Elivagar (eleven rivers - Svol, Gunnthra, Fiorm, Fimbulthul, Slidr, Hrid, Sylg, Ylg, Vid, Leiptr, and Gioll) flowed. The Elivargar froze layer upon layer until it filled in the northerly portion of the gap. Concurrently the southern portion was being filled by sparks and molten material from Muspelheim.

The mix of fire and ice caused part of the Elivagar to melt forming the figures Ymir the primeval giant and the cow Audhumla. The cow's milk was Ymir's food. While Ymir slept his under arm sweat begat two frost giants, one male one female, while his two legs begat another male.

While Ymir was busy procreating Audhumla was busy eating. Her nourishment came from licking the salty ice. Her incessant licking formed the god Buri. He had a son named Bor who was the father of Odin, Vili, and Ve.

For some reason the sons of Bor decided to kill poor Ymir. His blood caused a flood which killed all of the frost giants except for two, Bergelmir and his wife, who escaped the deluge in their boat.

Odin, Vili, and Ve put Ymir's corpse into the middle of ginnungagap and created the earth and sky from it. They also created the stars, sun, and moon from sparks coming out of Muspelheim.

Finally, the brothers happened upon two logs lying on the beach and created the first two humans Ask [Ash] and Embla [vine?] from them.

We need to keep a central repository of Creation Myths -- I guess you have them handy.

Let the CRIDers try to explain why their myth is superior.

To our great embarrassment, this article from the same reliable source: Equal time for "intelligent design" legislation in New York, says:
The bill's sole sponsor, Daniel L. Hooker (R) ... also recently introduced bills that would, if enacted, permit the display of the Ten Commandments on public buildings and grounds (A08073), declassify sexual orientation from civil right status (A07916), and prohibit the solemnization of same-sex marriages (A07723).
I don't object to some of those items, but when he adds creationism to his portfolio, he looks a double-agent from DU, trying to make Republicans look like idiots.

"... to ensure that all aspects of the theories, along with any supportive data, are fully examined through such course of study."

This should be interesting. On the one hand we have all Creation Science Scientific Publications (a big fat 0). On the other hand we have two floors of a SUNY anything Library. I'd like to see this.

I have close to 30 of these creation stories on file (I prefer not to call them myths). There are thousands more out there, some of which pretty interesting, but it takes time to find and format them.

I like the Coyote stories most of all.

I remember I was quite PO'd about those postings. Now, I am fond of them. Any one of 'em is more literate and poetic than Darwinism, fwiw. And Truth and Beauty are kissing cousins. Not all of Dawkins, Darwin, Huxley or Gould is the equal of most of your collected tales.

I'll change my rhetoric for a while -- I'll see if it makes any difference when chatting with the CRIDers.
