WASHINGTON -- The head of the Department of Homeland Security thinks the government can be as successful against illegal immigration as it has been with organized crime.
Michael Chertoff said it wasn't long ago that organized crime was considered an overwhelming problem. But he said with the smart use of resources, organized crime is just a shadow of what it was.
Chertoff thinks a wise approach along the Mexican border would be creation of a "virtual fence." He also favors more detention centers so illegal immigrants don't have to be freed before they can be deported, because there's no place to put them.
Chertoff also wants a detention center for families because they are now released -- something some smugglers have taken advantage of.
I didn't compare manned vs unmanned, because the essay was about unmanned aircraft vs men on the ground.
Now, anyone with common sense, can see that the same would apply to manned aircraft. Aircraft, manned or unmanned can not catch illegal aliens nor stop illegal aliens from crossing. Only the man on the ground or ground barriers such as fences and walls can do those tings.
Agreed.
That's a stupid idea. How the hell is Harry homeowner supposed to know if someone is illegal (besides picking up the obvious illegals at a Home Depot parking lot)?
Yeah, but it's tricky gettin' the collar around their necks! ;-)
This idea is like proposing a 'partial dam' in a river. Silly, ain't they...
Too start, ask them were they were born. If they were born outside of the US, ask them if they became a citizen or if they are a resident alien. If they are a resident aliens, ask them to show you their resident alien card.
During this 2 minute drill, you should be able to figure out if the guys lying. If he's lying, you probable have an illegal alien infornt of you.
If he asks why you want to know, let him know that you don't hire illegal aliens and you want to make sure he's legally here. If he's legally here, he'll produce.
After they get this done, we need a two more virtual fences. One is needed up there from Deleware to the southwestern tip of PA to keep Yankees where they belong. The second, which may intersect the first at a few points, needs to be done around the beltway in DC to keep the feds from meddling in things they have no business doing. If the government were still bound by the chains of the Constitution, this would not be necessary. Oh the price of societal "reform"!
Your #2 would require ammending the constitution, which for one I agree with, but it may take more than a few days.
Love the idea of Sherrif Joe being in charge of detention!!!
A $100,000 fine assessed against employers for each illegal alien employed would remove the financial incentive.
A virtual fence will virtually stop virtual immigrants.
A virtual fence isn't going to do SQUAT to keep terrorist who are determined to get into this country from getting in. It may stop illegal workers but not the security issue.
Our Government is pushing the edge of the envelope and I swear before God if their inaction causes the death of ONE american citizen IN this country, then every last damned one of them needs to be in fear of his or her life from prosecution by the people.
This is NOT about money, jobs or whether or not some rich jerk can get his azalea's bugsprayed for 1/3rd the cost. This IS about a potential bloodbath in one of our cities.
then I suppose the next step will be to incarcerate repeat offenders which will in turn require more jails and more staff and mor attornies and more taxpayer funded services. Talk about vicious circles. Furthermore some of those who wanted to get tough are busy lobbying for increases in the minimum wage that will assure that no one will be able to afford to hire a teenager to cut the lawn.
Yeah! What you said! Plus we could place packs of bloodthirsty pitbulls down there by the border and let 'em have a free for all on anyone who dares to cross!
The border problems are very much organized crime also. Illegals often pay coyotes by smuggling in drugs, false documents are big business. Some employers actually order a certain number of illegals delivered to them so it all get's trickier than people think. Then there is corruption and bribes to officials on both sides of the border. Everyone in the process makes big money off of the illegal who in many cases ends up in a situation very much like slavery.
How about a REAL damn fence and a minefield to go with it?
I agree, my point was that Chertoff says their efforts against "organized crime" was very successful.
Wrong! Their efforts against La Cos Nostra were somewhat successful but the gangs are just filling the voids. There was no success against "organized crime", just small victories over a portion of it.
My apologies to all you Sicilians (who, btw, are wonderful folks who I hope will allow me to keep my kneecaps intact)
That should be
La Cosa Nostra
Chertoff doesn't understand much- organized crime is very much alive in the US, both in gangs and border problems. He's a man that can't see beyond the end of his nose, but he is good at the official line of BS, and that is why we have him to begin with.
If you were going to compare men on the ground, you would compare to manned aircraft because that is what is predominately used.
If we use your logic, telephones and radios don't apprehend illegals, so get rid of them.
