Too start, ask them were they were born. If they were born outside of the US, ask them if they became a citizen or if they are a resident alien. If they are a resident aliens, ask them to show you their resident alien card.

During this 2 minute drill, you should be able to figure out if the guys lying. If he's lying, you probable have an illegal alien infornt of you.

If he asks why you want to know, let him know that you don't hire illegal aliens and you want to make sure he's legally here. If he's legally here, he'll produce.

You are so right. And that is why it is such a bad idea. You can bet dollars to donuts that the only people who will be fined will be the old lady who hired someone going door to door to trim palm trees. Meanwhile the casinos and recreation industries and drug dealers and more sophisticated businesses (insurance scammers and other nefarious transnational enterprises)will go on about their business and the courts will be cluttered up with a bunch of little folks who were reported by their neighbors.

then I suppose the next step will be to incarcerate repeat offenders which will in turn require more jails and more staff and mor attornies and more taxpayer funded services. Talk about vicious circles. Furthermore some of those who wanted to get tough are busy lobbying for increases in the minimum wage that will assure that no one will be able to afford to hire a teenager to cut the lawn.
