WASHINGTON -- The head of the Department of Homeland Security thinks the government can be as successful against illegal immigration as it has been with organized crime.
Michael Chertoff said it wasn't long ago that organized crime was considered an overwhelming problem. But he said with the smart use of resources, organized crime is just a shadow of what it was.
Chertoff thinks a wise approach along the Mexican border would be creation of a "virtual fence." He also favors more detention centers so illegal immigrants don't have to be freed before they can be deported, because there's no place to put them.
Chertoff also wants a detention center for families because they are now released -- something some smugglers have taken advantage of.
All we need to do is eliminate their incentive, viz., shut down businesses that employ illegals, including Harry Homeowner who might just hire one or two to build his deck.
That, and eliminating all social services would do the trick.
To go along with our virtual Republican majority in congress.
Yes and the"Virtual Fence"will stop the "Virtual Illegals"!
You asswipe, there weren't 14 to 20 million 'Wise Guys' roaming around. Maybe a couple thousand or so total at their zenith in the whole friggin country. And yet, after all these DECADES the FEEB still hasn't wiped them out.
Go away Chertoff - just go away, and STFU.
And while we're at it, we should try to get everybody to be nice to each other.
Wonder how many "virtual" votes this will cost "virtual republicans"?
It will virtually stop the virtual aliens. It's the real one that'll still flow across the real non protected border.
"Chertoff Wants 'Virtual Fence' Along Mexican Border"
You don't suppose the cameras will only point one-way do you? They will probably monitor only Americans crossing the border..
Well, at least it will keep out the Roombas.
This would shut down all the landscaping & construction companies here in florida.
All we need to do is eliminate their incentive, viz., shut down businesses that employ illegals, including Harry Homeowner who might just hire one or two to build his deck.
That, and eliminating all social services would do the trick.
And you have just explained why an enforcement-only solution will work, in just two sentences!
The problem is that people are against illegal immigration in an abstract way, but will oppose the very real measures needed to stop it if those measures inconvenience or threaten them.
To fix that all you have to do is stop paying welfare and unemployment. Hey, that's a benefit - a two-fer!
My sister had one of those virtual fences to keep her dog in the yard. It worked like a charm.
1. A real fence.
2. Get rid of the anchor baby laws.
3. Fine those who hire illegals.
4. Allow any LEO to arrest illegals.
5. See Sheriff Joe about housing illegals unitl they are deported.
Congress could take care of 2, 3, and 4 in one day, if they wanted to. Look what they did to kill the terminal (port) deal.
God forbid we build a real fence.
And how is that going to keep drug smugglers and MS-13 out?
#2 is going to require a constitutional amendment due to the unfortunate wording of the 14th Amendment.
As for #3: that will NEVER get done, because that means fining Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, those fine upstanding citizens who are against sin and in favor of motherhood. (News flash: a majority of prostitutes are mothers.) People oppose illegal immigration--and they oppose measures against illegal immigration that might inconvenience or punish them.
Chertoff wants something that won't deter, and will require a response team the size of an army. Massive increase in the Fed work force. Brilliant and according to plan.
Securing a 2,100-mile border will require an army-sized response team, period.
