SpongeBob on Brit Hume's Target List

The steady creep to the top for Brit Hume's nightly Special Report on Fox--not just the No.1 Washington-originated cable show but also the fourth in all basic cable at 6 p.m.--has the host eyeing the next victim. "We've been having a series of meetings here about how we can beat Nickelodeon," he says. "We just hope that they don't put SpongeBob SquarePants up against us." Fun aside, Hume's hourlong mix of news and debate now reaches 1.5 million nightly while dominating the key 25-to-54 age demographic. And it happened in a very un-Fox-like way: without fanfare, even though Hume has recently surged to the No. 2 spot among all cable news shows, after Bill O'Reilly.

When Special Report started in 1998, the goal was giving the growing Washington bureau some visibility. Now the top audience-getter of Washington shows, including CNN's Situation Room and MSNBC's Hardball, Hume says, "We kind of pinch ourselves." Like a good boss--Hume is the managing editor of the D.C. bureau--he credits his news team. But the "poisonous" mood in Washington doesn't hurt either. "For those who have a rooting interest in it," he says, "they want to hear about it."

While beating the pants off SpongeBob is a long-term goal, Hume has a more immediate worry: No. 12 ESPN's March Madness coverage. "If they've got games on at 6 at night," he frets, "that's gonna be tough."

I catch it every day, and switch to seinfeld reruns during the commercials. Screw the MSM.

Actually, it was Rush who prompted me to do it. He said that he had quit listening to the left's nightly news because it was beginning to affect his judgement - and his mood. He said he found himself getting more and more angry and he didn't like it.

Wow! When he said that .. I realized I had been experiencing similar reactions. So .. I decided to give Rush's method for sanity a try - and IT WORKED!

Lay off my main man Sponge Bob LOL.

Fred kind of reminds me of Mr. Eugene Krabs.

Mort reminds me of Gary Snail.

Mara reminds me of Patric Star.

Brit reminds me of Squidward Tentacles.

Juan reminds me of lame brained Spong Bob.

Charles reminds me of Sandy Cheeks.

The Krusty Krab reminds me of the kind of restaurant that most Conservatives would way down deep probably like to eat in if given a choice.

Hey, I am a bona-fide right wing card carrying conservative and I watch SpongeBob with my two elementary kids at least once a night.

Good Post and one that probably mirrors the other 1,550,000 viewers of Special report.

Unfortunately these things happen. Things go wrong and people lose the rapport and positive feelings which once existed between one another. An awkward situation. Words usually fail at this point. Being disliked is not exactly uplifting for anyone's spirits. People rightfully demand a minimum level of respect. When positive communication breaks down it's no surprise that has consequences.

If she is looking for business as usual without offering some sort of apology and explanation, that may be a mistake. Some people are emotionally warped and never rise above these issues.

I like spongebob - not perfect but it's not brainwashing. Brit's projecting. (the spongebob project is an attempt to lv an impression on children but imo, to them spongebob is just a cartoon.

Brit's spongebob objections are like John Gibson's War on Christmas. Does Brit have a book coming out or something?

Huge Brit Hume fan here. He is simply the best. I try to catch his show every day. On Sundays, I try to catch "Fox News Sunday" -- Wallace is excellent also -- and I feel cheated on the days that Hume is not on the discussion panel.

While I am a big Sponge Bob fan, Fox needs to put Brit's evening news on their local affiliates to go up against the rest of the empty heads. Kill them off once and for all.

I agree about feeling cheated when Brit isn't on the Fox News Sunday discussion panel. On the weekends, besides Fox News Sunday, we also love the "Fox News Watch" (with Cal Thomas, et al) and the "Beltway Boys" with Fred Barnes and Mort Kondrake.

My favorite moments on their Sunday shows come when Brit calmly talks Juan through one of his liberal melt-downs. Juan gets into one of his liberal talking point frenzies and I don't think he realizes that the viewers are aware of the fact that he's loosing his cookies on the air. Then Brit, calmly says "Juan...........Juan..." and then, in crystal clear terms that even the libs can understand, he discredits everything Juan has just said. I wish I had Tivo'd some of them.

LOL... these appearances with Brit and Juan are absolutely priceless! I can't believe how uninformed Juan is sometimes...

I agree! From what I can tell, the anchors at Hartford's Fox61 appear to be libs. They always get that sour look on their faces when they mention President Bush, Iraq or "the war on terror"...
