Evanston/Skokie District 65 officials will vote Monday night on whether to launch an African-centered curriculum at two elementary schools where almost half the pupils are black.
The proposal for the pilot project has been controversial because some parents say it would segregate children by race. Supporters, however, maintain that the program could help close the achievement gap between white and black pupils.
Most of the seven board members declined to speak on the record about the issue or how they planned to vote at Monday's meeting.
"It will likely result in single-race classrooms in a city that has a long history of integration," board member Mary Rita Luecke said.

I have an idea - How about some "algebra-centric" math?
I figure if you want your children to have an "afro-centric" educcation, send them to Africa.
Don't forget Idi Amin, Taylor and Winnie.
Here's a thought: We put America Centric history in schools and teach the kids what America is all about. A healthy dose of reality about our constitution and the rights we should be enjoying might open some of these students eyes!
They are in hopes that they can encourage some of the males to actually finish school and not be criminals by teaching them tribal propaganda.
Class dismissed.
Evanston has always had their heads on crooked. They are, for example, a nuclear free zone. Just think about that.
"Don't forget Idi Amin, Taylor and Winnie."
So many to choose from, currently.
I forgot about that. I try to stay away from Evanston.
I sometimes wonder just what are the limits of tolerance in muddled thinking of white liberals? Hip Hop is the perfect example. As long as obscenity is wrapped (pun intended) by the trappings of culture, anything goes.
How about math-centric, engineering-centric, business-centric, science-centric, etc.?
Divided we fall.
Do they think these things though at all?
Can anyone explain to me how an African-centered curriculum is going to "help close the achievement gap between white and black pupils"?
This is "Self-esteem therapy," in other words. Tell the kids they're special... give them all As... keep tests away. Flim-flam them with a bunch of phony and third rate celebrities, selected for race not achievement.
Yeah, that's just what the kids need.
[T]he benefits of a program that teaches African-American children about great black leaders, writers and scientists far outweigh any drawbacks.
The little details like... nonexistence of enough "great black leaders, writers and scientists" to make a curriculum without really stretching.
"Everything in the whole society validates white children," Summers said. "But there is not one ...program...that focuses on African-American children.
Let me get this straight -- if a white or yellow or red American does something noteworthy, black kids can't take any pride in it. Yeah, right, like white people can't admire great black Americans, whether it's Morgan Freeman or Clarence Thomas or Michael Jordan... how very silly.
Pupils in the program would learn state-required curriculum, but lessons would emphasize the contributions of Africans and African-Americans.
Yeah, cause if the kids aren't inculcated with separatism at an early age, they might get radical ideas like it's the "content of your character" that matters, or even that it's OK for a black kid to want to be like Burt Rutan or General Peter Pace even though they're white guys.
It's all about keeping em down on the plantation. "You're not slaves any more! Now let me explaine how sharecropping works..."
Some parents seemed less concerned about segregation than about the high numbers of black pupils falling behind, particularly in reading. More than 50 percent of African-American 3rd graders in the district tested below standards in 2005
You can't give a fair test to disparate groups and expect anything but disparate results. if your "equality" goal is equality of outcome, you can only achieve that with an unfair test.
"We do need the African-centered curriculum, absolutely," Muhammad said. "We have to have some way for African-American students to understand who they are."
Ms. Muhammad, itis probably not going to be news to the kids that they are black. By school age they have figured this out. Why not use school time to teach them some things they don't know already. A bogus "Accomplishment" never produces real pride.

Perpetuating the cycle of racism for a new generation.
You mean like Terese Heinz Kerry? She's more of an African American than Morgan Freeman.
There was a terrific thread here a few days ago explaining why blacks are not making it. Most of it had to do with children being born out of wedlock, raised without their fathers at home to set the right example. And as generations go by, the situation has gotten worse.
I think that is the goal of many on the left and in our government.
