What are your strategies for handling tax time?
Orlando Sentinel Reader to Reader ^ | March 19. 2006 | Emil Czul, Tom Kropewnicki

Posted on 03/20/2006 10:00:39 AM PST by Eaglewatcher

My solution is to do nothing differently except write to my U.S. congressman and U.S. senator and ask them to support the FairTax proposal, whereby the present federal income tax would be eliminated and replaced by a modified version of a national sales tax.

Emil Czul, Kissimmee

The most important strategy is working diligently for April 15th to become "Just another Spring Day." Why should people have extra taxes withheld from their paycheck? They receive no interest on this money. Who "plans" to pay at the end of the tax year? However, we must endure the current system for the moment.

Everyone should be researching the FairTax proposal and comparing it to the current system and their situation. They should log onto www.fairtax.org or call 1-800-FAIRTAX.

The people of this country have put up with this current system too long.

Tom Kropewnicki, Sanford

I just write the check and then get quietly lit. Wake in the morning with a hangover that blots out my resentment of the federal gov't.

I just give all the paperwork to my son-in-law, the tax lawyer.

Homer: Don't worry Marge, I got a leg up by paying taxes last year.

Maggie: But Dad, you have to pay taxes EVERY year.

1. Denial
2. Procrastination
3. Turbo Tax
4. Electronic filing over the Internet

All of which is heavily laced with spousal denigration concerning penalties, late fees, and interest, along with large doses of old fashion but effective nagging.

All followed by a week of decompressing and slow realization that I've finished with it again for another year. ;)

Who "plans" to pay at the end of the tax year?

I do. The alternative is to let the gubmint borrow the money, without interest.

"They are thinking about it all over the country."

And that's all that's going to happen about it, too. I LOATHE taxes and spend a good deal of my time thwarting them at every legal turn.

Here's my sermon. If only ONE Freeper considers my plea, my work here will be done. ;)

We live below our means. I actually LOOK at how much money DH & I should make in a year so we're still actually making money, versus working just to pay our taxes, then I try to have us meet that amount. In fact, when DH was making the big bucks, it didn't pay for me to work, eventhough I could've earned as much as he did then. (Now we work for ourselves; it's not such a problem anymore.)

I barter. I make money on the side and under the radar. I'm a big part of 'The Underground Economy' that scares the cr@p out of Big Government. I cook from scratch, I have a large organic garden and an orchard; I raise laying hens for eggs to sell, and I sell young hens each spring.

DH & I own our own business, and I have two small side businesses that I run from home.

People seriously need to educate themselves about taxes; and I mean ALL taxes. We have a 5.5% sales tax in my state (for now.) I consume as little as I can to avoid that tax. Same with buying gas (which is over 50% pure tax in some areas of the USA)...and I buy on the second hand market as much as possible. I limit "sin taxes" as much as possible.

I question and fight my Property Taxes on a regular basis.

I encourage everyone to sit down and actually crunch some numbers. Our lifestyle hasn't changed one whit other than the fact that we're keeping much more of our money now than we used to. :)

And if you met me, you'd think I was just an average Soccer Mom, LOL! I'm no Rocket Scientist. If I can do and understand this, anyone can.

Our AGI this year was under $30K. Tax refund this year was $2,500.00 for both state and federal. I generally break even and neither owe taxes nor get a refund, but we started another business this year and had more to write off than I had anticipated. :)

End Sermon, LOL! I just ask that others consider their tax base and educate themselves about how they're being hosed by the government.

If we can't get the Fair Tax reform passed at least abolish the VERY, VERY unfair AMT tax. It is creeping up on more and more people, myself included.

How about a new rule that Congressmen are not allowed to use outside accountants, computer programs or even a calculator to do their taxes? Make them sit down in the House chamber with a pile of tax forms on C-Span sometime early in April. I want to see them wailing in pain by the end of the day.

Grovel before my masters in Washington and hope that my generous offering will appease them.

If not, I will obey their diktats and drain my bank account of whatever amount they command.

Send the wife and kids to the beach for the weekend, get up early Saturday morning, drink a pot of coffee, lay everything out around the office floor, fire up the glowing box and start filling in the blanks.

Write big checks to the feds (2 ea) and the state (2 ea), returns and first quarter estimates, and then and only then have a few cold brewskis.

We just get someone to do our taxs for us. We recovered $900+ of our money from the government this year. We probably could do it ourselves, but, we have rental property now and didn't have a clue as to what to do.
