Too few Latinos visiting food pantries

Harvest of help: Study shows too few Latinos visiting food pantries
Estudio demuestra que pocos latinos visitan las despensas.

(excerpts) Although there are myriad food pantries in Chicago and the suburbs, not enough Latinos take home the free food (that the pantries) offer, according to a 2006 America's Second Harvest study.

Last year the Chicago network of almost 600 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters served almost 500,000 people, but only about 14 percent of them were Latinos, according to GCFD spokesman Bob Dolgan.

In the collar counties the situation is similar - only 13.2 percent of its 187,500 yearly clients are Latinos, said Northern Illinois Food Bank Executive Director Dennis Smith. The network has a network of 521 food pantries, soup kitchens and group homes.

We are very much aware that there are many more folks out there who are inneed of help." Smith said.

What's stopping many Latinos from frequenting food pantries is the fear that if they are illegally in the United States, they will be reported to immigration. . . . "

We just want to get the word out that we are here to help, and of course we always need help too," Smith said.

- My intent was to demean and ridicule white liberals. BTW some of my best friends are white liberals.

- I too have labored long and hard in voluntary charity ... but not so much forcing the taxpayers to pay from my sense of Christian calling.

- I agree with you that there is a big difference between a disaster situation such as Katrina and chronic visits for handouts.

- I didn't intend to demean your family. I strongly support VOLUNTARY charity.

re: I think the government gets the agricultural products that don't sell well on the open market.

The government creates a dairy subsidy program that encourages
1) Destruction of the family dairy farm.
2) Merger of small dairies into one large Dean Foods.
3) Skewing of dairy production to gain the subsidies.
4) Ag-business campaign donations to ensure that farm state politicians oppose the free market.

My parents church didn't get any money from the red cross or any other group. Remember all of the outcry when Bush wanted to pay churches for taking in Katrina evacuees? No federal money went to the churches. The church people donated clothes and food. Mostly we went through mountains of donated clothes, (mostly junk) and sorted and washed it in our home washer and brought it back to the church.

No wonder you love illegal mexicans so much. You have a warped idea of what America is and you really seem to hate it.

The immigrants are just plain too proud to take something for free from non-family.

Oh, please. Tell that to the thousands of families who live on the border and are robbed and broken into and their property destroyed every night. Why is theft and other crimes higher among the illegal migrant population than any other?

Nice try, though.

Ping!

Interesting phenomenon I've noticed in other venues, as well - food stamps, school lunch program, etc.

"Too few Latinos visiting food pantries"

Obviously hispanic immigrants are doing way too well in this country for the racist liberal moonbats to be satisfied. One can only assume this is their motivation for wanting to bring in more illegal immigrants. Otherwise, hispanics might wake up and figure out they're being lied to by liberals in regards to claims of racial repression.

"For an immigrant to "become Americanized" is to reject the role of the extended family as the primary institution of both "care" and social control."

" To "become Americanized" means to adopt the welfare state mentality and Hollyweird morality. "

" To "become Americanized" means your daughter will become like Britney Spears"

You obviously haven't got much out of your American experience, anyway. I feel they must take tests to come here. If they're this stupid they should be denied entrance.

"But they see the Republicans as "unfriendly" and "out of touch" with Latinos"

That's because most republicans don't get all warm and fuzzy over illegals or cheap labor subsidies, over-crowded schools and hospitals, and higher taxes.

"Not enough diversity on the food line?"

LOL! Don't worry. The libs will cure that through forced-integration (illegal immigration), or over-taxing hispanics until they go back on the welfare roles where all good liberals feel the 'minorities' belong. Once the EEOC and ACLU get wind of this, it's all over.

This seems a lot like the fire department complaining about not enough arson.

Great comments! (30)

I think both groups are intent on bringing in illegals or enacting a 'guest-worker' program just so they can preserve their feelings of superiority (self-esteem). Most haven't contributed anything of use to society since they quit publicly fouling their britches in pre-school (if they ever even got that far).

I'm glad someone else recognizes that the Bush-Fox immigration scheme is the main thing preventing Mexico from thriving.

Sending billions of untaxed dollars back to mexico, received from under the table jobs, yet bloating our health care facilities to the point of causing some ERs to have to close, swelling the Food Stamp program, leeching the education system of dollars that must be spent on ESL programs instead going to our legal citizen children, further degrading our school system by causing the curriculum to be "dumbed down" so that the non-english speakers do not fall behind, causing havoc on our roads by driving unlicensed, uninsured and untaught, degrading property values of a once-nice neighborhood with a "family" of 30 living in a home designed for 4 or 5, importing their gang problems (MS-13) into every segment of society...and on and on..., to the point of nausea, all of this is not accepting something for free?

I know you might not realize this but as someone once said:

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. These illegals are floodedwith food. Down in the valley, illegals sell their food stamps. One little baby guarantees free food for 5 years via WIC They have a large incidence of diabetics and obsity. They are not in the shadows and they are not bashful as they get what they want.

I may have a different idea of what America is than some other people. But I definitely do not hate it. I went to war for it and would do so again (if theyd take an old guy out of shape).

I'm basically for free market capitalism.
I'm opposed to socialism and mercantilism, which is the system opposed by capitalism's Adam Smith and is the system where the government "helps" business and "helps" people. I don't want the government "helping" me with my employment.

Of course free trade is "relative". The USA, Mexico, India are not "totally free"; but they are "mostly free". China is "mostly slave". Hence "free trade" with China is an oxymoron. But not with Mexico, even granted that it is not perfect.

Of those who "qualify" for food stamps, Latinos have one of the lowest levels of participation... far below Whte citizens who "qualify" and far below Black citizens who "qualify".

I'm very familiar with the taxpayer funded "outreach" programs. When the outreach workers or their organizations get paid piece rate, as is sometimes the case, they always prefer to avoid Latino areas because those areas are the hardest in which to convince people to participate. When they get paid hourly or in blocks of money, as is more often the case, they find it easier to do nothing in the Latino areas because they then have an excuse that everybody accepts.

A generalization could be made that many latinos, especially women, are slightly overweight. A smaller percentage of Latinos are grotesquely overweight than either White or Black citizens. A smaller percentage are bolemic skinny than white or black citizens.

The ones who are diabetic are those who have abandoned the traditional diet for an Americanized diet, which is a significant percentage of those who have been here over 10 years.

(My expertise is Illinois with some experience MN to TX. But I only know about CA-AZ-NM from what I read and hear second hand (both Latino and non-Latino sources) .)
