Too few Latinos visiting food pantries

Harvest of help: Study shows too few Latinos visiting food pantries
Estudio demuestra que pocos latinos visitan las despensas.

(excerpts) Although there are myriad food pantries in Chicago and the suburbs, not enough Latinos take home the free food (that the pantries) offer, according to a 2006 America's Second Harvest study.

Last year the Chicago network of almost 600 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters served almost 500,000 people, but only about 14 percent of them were Latinos, according to GCFD spokesman Bob Dolgan.

In the collar counties the situation is similar - only 13.2 percent of its 187,500 yearly clients are Latinos, said Northern Illinois Food Bank Executive Director Dennis Smith. The network has a network of 521 food pantries, soup kitchens and group homes.

We are very much aware that there are many more folks out there who are inneed of help." Smith said.

What's stopping many Latinos from frequenting food pantries is the fear that if they are illegally in the United States, they will be reported to immigration. . . . "

We just want to get the word out that we are here to help, and of course we always need help too," Smith said.

Not enough diversity on the food line?

LOL--I got the "starving children in China" routine, too. I asked my mother to mail it to them.

As it should be.

Is there a problem with that?

Very true. I learned that after getting married. It's way cheaper to cook basic, staple foods and freeze the leftover portions. We're talking $50 a week in savings.

I really resent your calling people who help at food banks white liberals, like it is some sort of negative thing. My father (retired) worked at the Baton Rouge food bank, helping distribute food to Baton Rouge area churches that were housing Katrina victims. He died of a heart attack after spending all day in the hot sun unloading a truck full of donated items. I never got to see him alive one last time. He was no liberal. BTW, all of the people that were housed at the churches in Baton Rouge were encouraged to find homes and moved out of the church shelters. The fema shelters are still housing evacuees who will probably be with them forever.

And they would take this as a piece of advice, rather than an insult. Amazing what an injection of work ethic can do for someone's life.

The immigrants are just plain too proud to take something for free from non-family.

Hmmm.

Yet taking pay for jobs under the table without taxation and accepting medical care and other benefits without contributing to them is not taking something?

Sending billions of untaxed dollars back to mexico, received from under the table jobs, yet bloating our health care facilities to the point of causing some ERs to have to close, swelling the Food Stamp program, leeching the education system of dollars that must be spent on ESL programs instead going to our legal citizen children, further degrading our school system by causing the curriculum to be "dumbed down" so that the non-english speakers do not fall behind, causing havoc on our roads by driving unlicensed, uninsured and untaught, degrading property values of a once-nice neighborhood with a "family" of 30 living in a home designed for 4 or 5, importing their gang problems (MS-13) into every segment of society...and on and on..., to the point of nausea, all of this is not accepting something for free?

You're right, they're not accepting something for free, they're down right ripping it off from us.

And they have no regrets whatsoever about it.

Sorry, but it ain't just the white liberals that are in denial about this.

America needs to wake the hell up and do as we did in VN when we had a leach on our butt.

Stick a lit cigarette to their butts and make them drop off, back to the swamp from whence they crawled.

I have no compassion for anyone in an illegal situation that knows, knows that what they are doing is illegal, but chooses that path anyway.

We are not the saviors of the world, nor should anyone in these turd-world countries automatically assume that we will take them in under any circumstances.

If they want to immigrate, then more power to them, but dammit, they must do it legally...otherwise they simply create problems that people such as myself are just damned tired of having to solve.

And that damn phone line, the one that rings here, in the US, everytime someone in the world dials 911, that one needs to be disconnected too.

I thought that I would never advocate an isolationist policy, but I see no other way to keep us out of every damn little mudhole and trouble spot in the world, and pouring our tax-dollars down the crap holes of these places, to help people that take it with one hand, yet hold a knife in the other, behind their back, waiting for the opportunity to slit our throats.

Rant over.

This is some truth about the parasite system of welfare dependence. One person in need has at least five state and gov't leeches collecting a paycheck off that one person's misfortune. In the always whiny blue states, the parasite system is the premier example of how the clueless, indoctrinated "social welfare" workers, people who couldn't capably work at a Dunkin' Donuts, are in charge of, and perpetuating, the socialization of personal misery. "Social workers" are the worst of the system, and they couldn't help one person without a meeting, a program, and lots of taxpayer dollars.

The Mexicans that I know are always afraid. They work to feed their families, and try and get ahead in a country that increasingly reviles them, yet they seem more independent-minded, and more reliant on faith than on the gov't dole. I was not the least bit surprised to read the stats contained in this article. I don't know a single Mexican who doesn't rely on family and friends during tough times. That said, I am 100% in favor of the Wall, and I think that Vincente Fox should be dragged into the World Court in the Hague and tried for crimes against his own people. I believe the World Court docket is clear this week.

For an immigrant to "become Americanized" is to reject the role of the extended family as the primary institution of both "care" and social control.

To "become Americanized" means to adopt the welfare state mentality and Hollyweird morality.

To "become Americanized" means your daughter will become like Britney Spears.

re: it sounds like this is an area that's ready to vote conservative!

Check out the poll of the Latino Coalition (a group formed to counter LaRaza, Atzlan, etc). That poll shows Latinos are conservative on most (with one exception) social and economic issues.

But they see the Republicans as "unfriendly" and "out of touch" with Latinos. This is because the image of Republicans on this issue is dominated by Republicans who come accross mean-spirited in the tradition of Pete Wilson.

Check out how many Freepers in these chats come accross "mean spirited".

re: I might be taking it from somebody who might really need it

The real need is in the people passing out the free cheese who have the need to feel needed. When you don't take what the government has redistributed to you, then it implies that such government redistribution is not needed and those doing the redistributing are not needed.

re; they have to go on T.V. to remind everyone that the food stamp program has plenty of stamps left.

Not to mention the taxpayer money spent on hiring "outreach workers" to twist the arms of the poor into trading their dignity for a mess of pottage.... and of course, those same outreach workers work hard to convince those who take the bait to register and vote. Those outreach workers (aka precinct captains in IL) never remind to vote the poor who have retained their dignity... Nor do the Republicans remind them to vote. Thus they have a low voter turnout.

Latino polls consistently show that those who don't vote are less Democrat than those who do vote. It's all in GOTV.

Yeah, and we can't have that. They must learn to be good socialist leeches because "you know them Latinos, they're just too dumb, stupid and ignorant to not need US to help them." Condescending, racist libs showing their cards again.

In my area the local news mediots will occasionally do TV infomercials for food stamps. Not enough people hooked on them, we need more....as if there are people out there that aren't aware of food stamps. They can't comprehend people being too proud and self-sufficient to need THEM.

re: non payment of municipal/state taxes by illegal immigrants

In IL the demand for housing, and purchase of homes by immigrants (legal and illegal) is the #1 reason property values skyrocket. Thus property assessments are high and local government (especially IL schools) have a windfall from the rising property assessments.

In IL, free use of emergency rooms is a mixed bag. Many immigrants do "home birth" with the extended family of experienced women doing quite well. Of those who go to the hospital, some are pre-arranged appointments for delivery thru a family doctor. Some arrive at the Emergency room with no warning. Some pay. Some don't.

It used to be that cash was king with medical providers (because it never appeared in income taxes ? ) It used to be that immigrants would pay cash up front and get a steep discount because the medical providers did not need to do any paperwork.

Now, the government penalizes medical consumers for paying cash. Providers are prohibited from providing the common sense discounts. The result is that immigrant cash customers are billed much more than insured customers for the same procedure .. as required by law.

But it is WE AND OUR WHITE LIBERAL friends who have created this problem. The immigrants (legal or illegal) did not create our crazy health care system. They just try to navigate it.

My (ex-illegal) wife sells baby clothing to immigrants (legal and illegal) and thus I have extensive contact with them and discussions of their baby stories Fri-Sun which I mostly spend around her business. I've seen them forgo winter clothing for themselves and their kids so they can make payments on their hospital bill.
