Sky falls in on Bush the outcast
Plagued by Iraq, the President's own party is abandoning him as his poll ratings plunge. Paul Harris reports from New York
Sunday March 19, 2006
The Observer (UK)
When president George W Bush launched a high-profile series of speeches last week aimed at calming nerves about the Iraq war he chose to do so in the heart of Washington DC. At George Washington University, he asked America to stay the course through troubled times. It was a familiar message to an audience that had heard it all before.
What was new was the make-up of the crowd: only five Republican congressmen and one senator attended. As displays of loyalty go it left a lot to be desired. It seems Bush should worry less about the US abandoning Iraq and more about his party abandoning him.
Tarnished by the war and a never-ending flow of domestic scandals, Bush is increasingly being seen as a liability to Republicans facing November's mid-term elections. Many of the party's senior members are distancing themselves from their President with a new willingness to disobey orders from the White House.
The reason for the change is simple: disastrous polls. Four published last week put Bush's approval ratings at historically low levels. Gallup and NBC gave him 36 per cent, while CBS had him at 34 per cent and Pew on an anaemic 33 per cent. 'When the President is above 50 per cent then party unity follows. When you sink into the thirties it is every man and woman for themselves,' said Larry Haas, a political commentator and former staffer in the Bill Clinton White House.
While Bush will never fight another election, that is not true for many members of his party running in the congressional ballots.

And even the drop in support for Bush's handling of Iraq...the media refuses to look into it too deeply as they will see that the people think he's handling it with too much PC.

All those thousands of negative stories, the hundreds of biased polls, and the constant lies, distortions, and savage attacks against President Bush by liberals and their media is to demoralize the Republican base and hence achieve a victory for the democrats this coming November elections after they have failed to do so many times before. Therefore the ultimate question is will the democrats win this November elections?
The Republicans have a very simple plan during this election campaign to greatly energize the base of Republican voters and independents who lean Republicans:
1. Iran.
2. If the democrats win the House of Representatives this November they will impeach President Bush in time of war.
Those two simple themes will bring the Republican voters by huge numbers to the voting booths and the democrats will be badly surprised, again.
An assinine comment. Congress yielded to the worst instincts of the American public and played the racist xenophobe card in the DPW ports case.
It worked.
Bush did the right thing while the GOP Congress endured its most shameful hour.
Me, too! I sure hope Frist and Alexander are still hanging in there. They are my Senators. I think this "everybody hates Bush" is alot of hyped up media and liberal crap, anyway.
I got your six, Sir.
That goes for me too! Very well stated.
BTTT
Well stated, sinkspur.
Fiction.
I agree. I think that is why we have not been attacked since 9/11. IMHO I think Al Qaida can strike the US anytime, but are refraining, knowing an attack would unify the US public on the efforts in Iraq. Keeping the US off limits allows the US political disunity to destroy GWB war efforts in Iraq and eventually force the US to pull out. Once we are out of Iraq, the Arabs terrorists will strike the US homeland.
What's the old expression, "pretty is as pretty does"?
Where did the idea that popularity is so important or has much to do with reality?
What's important is effectivness and accomplishment. What's important is reality, not perception or image despite what Hollywood and the "liberals" want you to believe.
What's important is defending freedom and the country from the leftist defeatists and the Islamofascist war tide against Western civilization.
That's more important and meaningful than polls or popularity.
You can always tell when a dem is lying, their lips move.
LOL
Good analysis.
Isn't it amazing? The media is now trying to convince us that disloyalty and opportunism are sterling character qualities.
I will support President Bush until the day he goes home to a well-deserved retirement in Crawford.
...and yet, he still remains President of the United States until the end of 2008...
Who needs their DNA polluting the gene pool, anyway. :^)
Remember the Shakers?
Thanks, Bill. We know it, don't worry.
