What We've Gained In 3 Years in Iraq by Donald Rumsfeld
Washington Post ^ | March 19, 2006 | Donald H. Rumsfeld

Posted on 03/18/2006 7:34:36 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Some have described the situation in Iraq as a tightening noose, noting that "time is not on our side"and that "morale is down." Others have described a "very dangerous" turn of events and are "extremely concerned."

Who are they that have expressed these concerns? In fact, these are the exact words of terrorists discussing Iraq -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his associates -- who are describing their own situation and must be watching with fear the progress that Iraq has made over the past three years.

The terrorists seem to recognize that they are losing in Iraq. I believe that history will show that to be the case.

Fortunately, history is not made up of daily headlines, blogs on Web sites or the latest sensational attack. History is a bigger picture, and it takes some time and perspective to measure accurately.

Consider that in three years Iraq has gone from enduring a brutal dictatorship to electing a provisional government to ratifying a new constitution written by Iraqis to electing a permanent government last December. In each of these elections, the number of voters participating has increased significantly -- from 8.5 million in the January 2005 election to nearly 12 million in the December election -- in defiance of terrorists' threats and attacks.

One of the most important developments over the past year has been the increasing participation of Iraq's Sunni community in the political process. In the volatile Anbar province, where Sunnis are an overwhelming majority, voter turnout grew from 2 percent in January to 86 percent in December.

In the volatile Anbar province, where Sunnis are an overwhelming majority, voter turnout grew from 2 percent in January to 86 percent in December. Sunni sheiks and religious leaders who previously had been sympathetic to the insurgency are today meeting with coalition representatives, encouraging Iraqis to join the security forces and waging what violent extremists such as Abu al-Zarqawi and his al-Qaeda followers recognize as a "large-scale war" against them.

Exactly. Iraq is going swimmingly. There is no militarily effective resistance to the Coalition or Iraqi government forces. All you have is Islamo ts and Saddamites blowing themselves up with the women and children. It's horrific, but not even a tactical threat.

The only way we could lose is to surrender to defeatism.

The incredibly inspirational developments in Iraq along with the booming economy will be suddenly discovered (by the MSM) the day after a Democrat is in the Whitehouse. Just like the way the dot-com, white-collar recession and the tanking stock market did not become an issue until Bush took office.

Let us state some simple statistics and analysis:

20,000 terrorists in Iraq armed with AK47, IED, and RPJ against hundred of thousands of coalition troops armed with most advanced and lethal weapons in history, including 150,000 US troops the most powerful military in history of mankind, 8000 British troops, 10000 troops from other nations, and 250,000 Iraqi army and police.

The 20,000 terrorists’ attacks are directed at a rate that exceeds 80% against innocent civilians. Do you know about a war that was won by sending terrorist suicide car bombs to blow up women and children? It never happened before, it is not happening now, and it will never happen in the future.

The 20,000 terrorists in Iraq have the support of less than 10% of the Iraqi population and the absolute hate and disdain from over 80% of the population. Insurgencies in general are supported by the majority of population and it is an impossibility that any insurgency can win when 80% of the population absolutely hates it.

The 30,000 terrorists are located in three or four provinces at maximum out of the 18 provinces in Iraq. No insurgency can win if it cannot cover over 80% of a country land area.

The terrorist insurgency could not prevent any political milestone from occurring in Iraq, like parliamentary elections, forming of a government, referendum and approval of the Iraqi Constitution, etc… Any war without a political goal is guaranteed to fail.

Based on the above what are the chances that the terrorist insurgency in Iraq winning or going to win? Absolute zero.

We are winning this war against the terrorist in Iraq and soon we will achieve the ultimate victory.

Another way that we're gaining a lot in Iraq, is just in the experience that our young career officers are getting in fighting the lowest kind of human scum. Fighting monsters that kill children running to get some candy. After a year in Iraq, these officers aren't greenhorns who'll walk into an ambush easily, or take their eye off the ball easily. Not the ones who survive with their wits and their memory. A lot of this kind of knowledge goes straight to the gut, and never gets to the brain, but it's always there in the gut.

I'd like to read the rest of it, but it would require a means by which the Washington Post would derive a profit (which I will not support). Somehow, I don't think articles by public officials should be protected by copyright

I don't see how people can think the situation in Iraq is positive. I keep getting the distinct impression that the end result is going to be another Islamofascist state. There have been too many blunders made in post war Iraq. With every passing month, it seems more unlikely that there will be a positive outcome.

Rumsfeld may sound great in his writings and press-conferences, but at the end of the day, the results are all that count. While there are some positive things in Iraq, a stable democratic government isn't one of them.
