Frustrated by the Senate Judiciary Committee's slow progress on politically sensitive immigration legislation, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) introduced his own bill last night to secure the nation's borders and crack down on illegal immigration.
Frist's bill will go directly to the full Senate. But he said he will allow Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) to substitute a committee bill if Specter's panel could approve one March 27. Otherwise, the majority leader will stick to a strict, two-week schedule to finish work on what he conceded would be "as challenging a bill as any we'll have to address this year."
The majority leader's power move stunned committee Republicans and Democrats, who have been struggling for three weeks to reach agreement on a comprehensive immigration bill. Specter said he objected to the maneuver. ...

He could be considering a run for President. Also, one benefit of low poll numbers for a President is that it frees up members of the President's Party to start acting independently.
Bush's numbers aren't low. Those are lies spun by the MSM in a vast left wing consiracy to hurt the POTUS and make Republicans cry. He is actually around 80% and has been since birth.

If this passes, I'd bet good money we'll see the President's first veto...
His boss, Vicente, will demand it.

Such a result would give me 70% of what I want which is a lot better than what traitors such as Specter, Kennedy and Cornyn McCain are sponsoring. Fixed it.

Why would you cross Cornyn's name off the list? He is a pushing the shamnesty just as much as "the Swimmer".

Frist is serious - seriously paying attention to the mood of the public. Is he up for reelection this year? I don't think so, I think it is probably a feeble attempt to make it look like something is being done in hopes that folks like you, and I will "shut up, and go away."

Frist's bill looks good, but it clearly needs far more provision for the 700 miles of fence as contained in the House bill.

I guess everyone chose not to read the second paragraph in which Frist says that he will allow Specter to substitute the committee bill.

Why are they traitors? Because they trash our national sovereignty and reward foreign born law breakers (illegal immigrants aliens)There, fixed it

They will just do what they have always done. Ignore the parts of the law that they don't want to enforce. Tie the number of H1B visas to demonstrated enfocement guidelines. e.g. 10,000 additional H1B visas when the estimated number of illegals in the country drops below 10 million. 10,000 additional H1Bs and 100,000 additional immigrant visas for each million it drops thereafter. A reasonably high bar for immigrant visas such as a demonstrated history of law-abidy productivity, tax payment, ability to communicate in English, military service, etc. Enough positives could even overcome illegal entry-- but for illegal entrants without enough positives, they would have to get in line behind those outside of the country wanting in.

In addition to introducing the bill, Senator Frist introduced a cloture motion ... cloture vote would be held on Tuesday, March 28. Just to clarify, the cloture motion and cloture vote is NOT on the bill itself, but rather is on a motion to pick up the bill for consideration.
Invoking cloture on a motion to proceed to consideration is not common, but is not unusual. See http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1569317/posts?page=423#423 for a short list.
A motion was entered to close further debate on the motion to proceed to consideration of S. 2454 and, in accordance with the provisions of rule XXII of the Standing Rules of the Senate, a vote on cloture will occur on Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Daily Digest for March 16, 2006

But as another poster noted, it is apparent that he IS in the preliminary stage of running for President.I intensely dislike the guy. If he gets a bill that secures our borders and kicks out the invaders. then chooses Tancredo as his VP I will give him my whole-hearted enthusiastic support and loyalty.
