On this day in 1945, the Carrier Franklin took two bombs on her flight decks as she was arming for air strikes on Japan -- from only 50 miles offshore. The bombs ignited ammunition and fuel, turning the ship into an inferno. Over 800 died, but the Franklin was saved and returned to New York under her own power. She suffered the WWII record for highest casualties of any ship that did not sink. One of the dead was my unmet father in law -- my kids' grandfather, a surgeon who was trapped by fires and died at his post with all his patients.
