Researcher Will Face Charges in Steele Case
Washington Post ^ | Mar. 16, 2006 | John Wagner

Federal prosecutors have decided to bring charges against a Democratic researcher accused of fraudulently obtaining a credit report on Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, now a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Lauren B. Weiner, who has since resigned from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Washington, will be charged with obtaining the report without authorization, according to a letter sent to Steele by the U.S. attorney's office in the District.

Took 'em long enough but it's good news, nevertheless.

I love the ,"I made a mistake" defense. I guess she was trying to access her own credit report but used Steele's SS number instead. It was all innocence.

I wonder why Mr Wagner did not seek out Sen. Schumer for comment. Sen. Schumer has many duties but can usually be persuaded to talk for the press and even pose for pictures.

The story suggests that "both parties did it": "...both parties started digging into the backgrounds of opposing candidates for one of Maryland's marquee races this year..."

It also suggests that Schumers Jane Bond wannabee has good reason for trying to steal Steele's data: "Personal finances were fertile territory for researchers looking into Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele," is the caption for a picture of Steele, cropped "60-Minutes-Scary-Close."

Apparently the fix is in for Weiner... she pleads to a misdemeanor, and then walks in a year. This will save her a lot of money she'd have had to use buying a pardon from Hillary... heh.

... but let a Republican clerk in a podunk county forget to cross a "t" and it's a sign of massive corruption going all the way to the White House.

I couldn't agree with you more, but being a native Marylander living in upstate NY, I can tell you Democrats are more than willing to throw their minor sacrifices to the wolves. Weiner will be a good little KoolAid drinker, say she's sorry, and be clear in a year. And the MSM is MORE than willing to let this one pass by with a minimum of attention.

It should go down to Chuckie, but it unfortunately never will. When the MSM passed on Clinton's sale of missile technology to the Chinese for a contribution to the DNC, it set a new low for journalistic integrity. Now they don't even have to pretend to be objective - I doubt the NYT or the Washington Pravda will even report on this one.

Sorry for being so negative, but this one's over, ready to be swept under the rug...

fraudulently obtaining a credit report on Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele

Does the same apply to us peons, or does it just apply to politicians?

I wonder if she's any relation to Congressman Anthony Weiner.

She won't spill any beans. The article said she settled for a plea deal...pleading guilty to a misdemeanor. Slap on the wrist.

I thought I had read she worked for Schumer, but no mention of it in this story. I wondered if she was related to NY Congressman Anthony Weiner. And since he and Chuckie are tight friends, perhaps he hooked her up with a job in Chuckie Schmukie's office.

Schumer is the head of the Committee that she was working for when she did this. No question that he hired her, and she was working under his direction.

She was hired for her previous experience in "opposition research" when working for 527s, including all kinds of legal and illegal information gathering.

Heck, after this fluffer of a story, the Post will probably offer her a job invading the privacy of other Republicans. They've shown often enough that they have no regard for the law.

There are no consequences for Democrats for any crime, up to murder (ask Ted). You have to be careful cause if you are too distant from your capo you might not be protected (ask Mike Skakel, next visiting day).
