WASHINGTON -- President Bush on Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian uprising, the first significant move against Soviet dominance in central Europe.
"The Hungarian example is an example of patience and an example of the fact that freedom exists in everybody's soul," Bush said at a celebration of National Hungary Day held at the Capitol.
"It's an example that tyranny can never stamp out the desire to be free. It's an example that - of a country that, once becomes free, joins with other freedom-loving countries to keep the peace."
The Kremlin sent Soviet tanks into Hungary on Nov. 4. 1956, to crush a revolt after Imre Nagy, the Hungarian prime minister and communist reformer, formed a coalition government, proclaimed neutrality and withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. Nagy, who was in power only 10 days, was arrested and later executed. Some 200,000 Hungarians fled the country and many more were imprisoned.
Bush thanked Hungary for contributing in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also recognized Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., who joined the anti-Nazi underground movement in Hungary and later was taken prisoner to a Nazi labor camp.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to ever serve in Congress, is an expert on human rights and a fierce advocate for political prisoners across the globe.
"Lantos is a voice for those who have no voice, for people who have no hope, for people yearning to be free," Pelosi said.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., also thanked Hungary for setting an example of a free society that was a bulwark against extremism. "Even now, as we are watching the roots of democracy take hold in Iraq and Afghanistan and Liberia, we must commit to doing everything we can to foster democratic institutions in developing nations," Hastert said.

Go to any porn site. 75% of the women are Hungarian, with the remainder Brazilian. Just doing the illicit sex that Americans refuse to do. :-)
It is too late for me to even attempt to match your wit.
I really am enjoying it though.
I thought an authentic photo of Soviet T-54s tearing through Budapest was appropriate. Silly me!
Buda and Pest are amazing towns, though!
:-)
