The Bush administration Wednesday night released the first declassified documents collected by U.S. intelligence during the Iraq war, showing among other things that Saddam Hussein's regime was monitoring reports that Iraqis and Saudis were heading to Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks to fight U.S. troops.
The documents, the first of thousands expected to be declassified over the next several months, were released via a Pentagon Web site at the direction of National Intelligence Director John Negroponte.
Many were in Arabic with no English translation including one the administration said showed that Iraqi intelligence officials suspected al-Qaeda members were inside Iraq in 2002.
The Pentagon Web site described that document this way: "2002 Iraqi Intelligence Correspondence concerning the presence of al-Qaeda Members in Iraq. Correspondence between IRS members on a suspicion, later confirmed, of the presence of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Moreover, it includes photos and names."
The release of the documents, expected to continue for months, is designed to allow lawmakers and the public to investigate what documents from Saddam's regime claimed about such controversial issues as weapons of mass destruction and al-Qaeda in the period before the United States invaded Iraq in March 2003.

Doing everything they can to down play this at Asso Propagana now aren't they.
hmmmmmmm....guess I'll have to go out a buy an Arabic/English Dictionary now...
Saddam is as dirty as they come...he did aid and support terrorists, including Al Qaeda...the evidence is mounting.
Darn....why would al Qaeda be in Iraq? What do they think it is, Yale University?
Actually I wonder if you can lay your hands on the Doc if Freeper Iraqikurd would not help us out.
They thought Salman Pak was a satellite campus for Embry-Riddle...
You don't need an Arabic/English dictionary to know that Islam, the left and the Islamofascists are at war with us.
They're not going to stop.
They don't want "peace", they want to destroy America, the Jews, Israel and Western civilization. Simple as that.
I bet so.....and I wonder if the PrinceOfCups speaks Arabic...he has been in the Middle East a long time.
Give out a ping. Couldn't hurt.
I just wish the "powers that be" would realize it...and I don't mean President Bush...
I think he "knows" it....but, as POTUS, he can't say what he thinks...remember how much trouble he got into by talking about the EVIL ones...during his State of the Union address years ago???
I guess there are so many docs that they decided just to start releasing them even if they aren't all translated.
"the administration said showed that Iraqi intelligence officials suspected al-Qaeda members were inside Iraq in 2002." ??????
That has the appearance and flavor of a L/MSM spin, implying clearly that Iraqi intel did not know whether or not al-Q mbrs were in Iraq, but could only suspect their presence.
Har, har-de-har!!
We would be intrested in hearing your thoughts on these documents if you have the time.
I know that Stephen Hayes...that has been writing about this for months and months...has said that at first the thought was to have it all translated...
BUT, when told it could take a very long time...with the limited translators they have...plus, the chance that those that don't want to believe there were WMDs anyway, might question that actua translation...
It would be better to just "dump" them...and let the "public" decide.
However, I guess Negroponte at first said that there wasn't much there....and now is saying it isn't good to release them because of the possible intelligence that could be gleaned from them...so go figure.
Aren't there literally millions of people in this country who know Arabic? Why can't they just work in shifts of 8 hours a day everyday?
Wish I could read this one? Conclusion of report about the elections campain in France.
Are there different "dialects" that would also complicate translation?
I know that even here in the US...the way certain things are phrased, can change from the north to the south...at least enough that someone who is new to the language could get confused.
Exactly. And it is going to be interesting to see how the MSM tries to bury this when the blogosphere and talk radio will be all over it. Oh the gymnastics that will be employed. Heh heh.
It will start something like this: **fingers in ears** lalalalalalalala.
I heard lefties on the radio today already attacking these as fake and suspicious because of "Bush's low poll numbers".
They even went on to say that "Saddam never had any WMD. This was the lie to take us to war." Yeah, Bozo? Tell that to the Kurds. I have had it with them. I say full-court press assault. Let's roll.
