Perhaps they rebuilt the city? It doesn't exclude that the city was (partially) destroyed.

The Phoenicians are known to have placed their cities on the coast near water springs, which for them meant that there was a divine presence there .

Thery placed their cities on the coast because they were sea traders and they placed them by springs because every city needs good water.
Let's not overcomplicate the explanation.

Phoenicians traveled a lot by sea. I would not be surprised if they went to Asia and Australia.
