Taheri-azar Writes to Eyewitness News [religion-of-peace alert]

Eyewitness News received the letter Monday, in response to our request for an interview. It was sent from Central Prison in Raleigh and dated Friday, March 10.

Addressed to ABC11 Eyewitness News anchor Amber Rupinta, the two-page letter includes Taheri-azar's explanation of what he was trying to accomplish in the attack.

"Allah gives permission in the Koran for the followers of Allah to attack those who have raged war against them, with the expectation of eternal paradise in case of martyrdom and/or living one's life in obedience of all of Allah's commandments found throughout the Koran's 114 chapters..."

"The U.S. government is responsible for the deaths of and the torture of countless followers of Allah, my brothers and sisters. My attack on Americans at UNC-CH on March 3rd was in retaliation for similar attacks orchestrated by the U.S. government on my fellow followers of Allah in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and other Islamic territories. I did not act out of hatred for Americans, but out of love for Allah instead. "

Taheri-azar is charged with nine counts of attempted murder in the March 3 attack. Police say the Iran native drove a rented SUV through the Pit, a common area on the Chapel Hill campus. Six people were hospitalized.

Taheri-azar surrendered to police shortly after the attack. Investigators swarmed his apartment, where they discovered a letter, CDs and a handgun permit.

Fine. Confiscate his passport and cut him loose. Rumor has it that there are people that will grant his wish of martyrdom.

It's completely logical in his mind. He is not an Islamofascist, he is just a normal Muslim following his sacred texts. The muzzies who don't do this are not moderates, they're apostates.

It will be interesting watching this guy try to plead "guilty" (as he seems so proud of his deed), while his lawyers are trying to say "insane".....

Technically, he doesn't have lawyers. He wants to defend himself. Judge Devine assigned him the public defender anyway. I've seen her do this for others when she thinks the charges are too serious.

You'd think after all those years in Chapel Hill he would've figured out that it's far easier to run people over on Duke's West Campus than in the Pit..

Ahhh... just let him go free... 10 minutes after the basketball game on Thursday... right outside a sports bar in Chapel Hill... and be sure to announce it well ahead of time.

PS. And I do have a serious point, that I should probably just state because it's hardly self-evident. Three points actually!

1) This could've been far worse if this guy wasn't an idiot, or purposely trying to minimize casualties. Plowing into a crowd on, say, Franklin Street or Duke's West Campus would've been much more deadly.

2) I wonder to what degree there was personal grievance against Chapel Hill involved. Why did he pick such a difficult location to pull of a hit and run (you can't pick up any speed in the Pit, even if you get a vehicle down there).

3) If this random Jihadists Gone Wild phenomenon becomes a trend, things're gonna get real ugly real fast.

When and which American drove an SUV into innocent students at a University? Or, in any other manner or place, knowingly targetted innocents?

Never happened.

That's a good point. We've been lucky insofar as the Jihadis always seem to choose some massive, Wagnerian, phallic metaphor as a method of attack. Very deadly, but also very costly and time-consuming, as well as more easily detected and thwarted. If they decided to concentrate on smaller, cheaper, more frequent actions, such as sniper attacks, train derailments, throwing bowling balls off overpasses during rush hour, etc., they could really put a damper on the collective mirth.
