Police: Man Carjacks Minutes After Jail Release

POSTED: 1:43 pm EST March 14, 2006
UPDATED: 2:35 pm EST March 14, 2006

A man accused of stealing an off-duty Orange County deputy's car with her son inside had just been released from jail on similar carjacking charges minutes before the crime, Local 6 News has learned.

Investigators said Deputy Tonjali Frost, 37, her bail-bondsman husband and her 4-year-old son were at a RaceTrac gas station across the street from the Orange County Jail near John Young Parkway Monday night putting gas in both of their cars.

Police said when Frost's husband ran into the station to pay for gas, Jerome Nez jumped into the couple's white Jeep sport utility vehicle and drove off with the family's 4-year-old still in the vehicle.

  • Jerome Nez.

The child somehow managed to exit the vehicle by either jumping or being pushed out near the gas station, Local 6 News reported.

When the child was out of vehicle, Frost and her husband opened fire at the fleeing SUV, Local 6 News reported.

Blocks away, Nez crashed into another vehicle and was taken into custody after a search of a nearby subdivison.

"Everybody is OK, but since it is a deputy who is involved and we have shots fired, we have to do a full-blown investigation," Orange County Sheriff's spokeswoman Crystal Candy said. Nez is charged with grand theft auto and burglary in connection with the incident.

After an investigation, detectives learned that just weeks ago, Nez was accused of carjacking a man outside a Mobil gas station near Apopka, Fla. However, the victim could not be reached or chose not to cooperate, according to prosecutors. So, the state attorney's office dropped the charges against Nez.

"After being released from jail, Nez may not have had a ride home so investigators said he simply carjacked the deputy's vehicle," Local 6 reported Mike DeForest said. Frost is on routine administrative leave for the investigation.

IT LOOKS THERE NEEDS TO BE A NEW POLICY STIPULATING: NO MORE RIDES HOME GIVEN, ESPECIALLY BY ARRESTING OFFICERS!

I love a happy ending. Now, it will be interesting to see what the media/Brady Bunch does about her Bailbondsman husband opening fire on a perp who was no longer a threat to him or his family.

Personally, I hope they ignore it. Precedent is always nice. :-)

Hurting children deserves nothing but the worst penalty. They are born so innocent and desire to live without a world of hurt.

The gang tattoos on his neck tell the whole story; this thug is irredeemable and needs to be away from civilized humanity for the rest of his life, hopefully a short one. A prime candidate for my oft-repeated "rock in the Aleutians" solution.

Man, why do you sat things like that about a future Democrat office holder? Don't you know that this is all because of the Bush tax cuts?

Darwin Award nominee. Apparently he wanted to return to prison pronto. This was record time to commit a crime. Now there's a rhyme to remember! ;-)

Silly me! Why of course you'd pack your guns with the rest of the necessities. LOL You won't have to fight crime in our neck of the woods, but guns are certainly an asset when it comes to bears and angry moose. And us gramma's have to hold on to our "assets". ;)

Indeed. We shall go hunting. When it warms up, of course.

Real warm. You know. WARM. :)

Is that a teardrop tattoo under his right eye (our left)? Doesn't that mean he killed someone?

There is a reason you never see a "Survivor" episode filmed in northern Alaska

I thought it was the "less clothing = more viewers" equation.

I frequently wish there was a planet that we could send these people to where they can tough it out with just the basics for an existence alone with just each other to maim and murder. Of course they would all have to be fixed so they could not reproduce since many females are now as bad as males.

Ah yes, I know "warm". I remember it well, I long for it, and tonight I will get down on my knees again and pray that it returns early this year. Guns and cabin fever are NOT a match made in heaven. har har

You'd think these parents would know better than to leave a child in a car with keys available. Idiots

Even if the owner had the keys on him and the car was locked the child should NOT have been left alone. Anyone could have broken the window and kidnapped the child. To heck with the vehicle. These parents should have protected their child. If the car owner wasn't a cop, child protective services would have been called and the child possibly would be in a temporary foster home. These parents should have child endangerment charges against them. No exceptions for cops or their families.

Harvard would undoubtedly be delighted to have him. After all, Yale is currently hosting a former Taliban official with a 4th grade education, at reduced tuition no less. They consider him a prize catch. I caught that little tidbit on another thread, hence the reference (even if the school was wrong). Nice tagline.

Thought about that one too.

In this case I'd agree.
