Is UAE Port Deal Really Dead?
The Post Chronicle ^ | 3/13/06 | J. Grant Swank, Jr

Does it mean that UAE is really gone from US ports? Or does it mean that they are just handing over managerial control to the US while still actually owning?

Good question. Some Congresspersons are wondering the same.

According to Jonathan Weisman of The Washington Post, to safeguard any loopholes a bill is proposed to make certain the UAE is completely OUT. Gone. En toto.

US President George W. Bush says that the Congressional reaction will damage US-Muslim relations. Rational persons ask if anything in the world can improve secure-never-to-be-broken US-Muslim relations. After all, we are dealing with a worldwide cult that can be friend today, foe tomorrow.

The Dems want to somehow resurrect this port deal so that they can demogogue it. That's the only thing the Dems know how to do.

The politicians think we are either stupid or have a short attention span.

Based on the reaction of folks like Hannity & Savage, I vote for "stupid."

Ooh, great idea. That might encourage the UAE to make sure the US is really out of the UAE.

Care to guess where the nearest repair facility is for US Navy warships after Dubai?

Guam.

There is a lot of money for some on this deal.

In both directions - that is, some make money if UAE is able to retain ownership, others gain if UAE is required to sell.

E.g., Patty Murry's husband is a consulatnt for SSA, which operates in the US in various combinations of business interest, for eample JV with COSCO in Long Beach, wehre COSCO has controlling interest in the lease.

Well said! I'm not suprised at Savage's reaction, but Hannity, Bennet, Hewitt...they should know better.

What IS it with you guys that just have to see the DPW gets this deal? I don't understand the vehemence with which you are supporting this?

Dubai is tiny part of the world and you act like it's the most important ally we ever had.

They have really good facilities in South Africa, and much closer than Guam.

Ooh, great idea. That might encourage the UAE to make sure the US is really out of the UAE.

That suits me just fine. It would mean that there really isn't a islamic "religion of peace", and that we have been wrong to fight this war in a politically correct manner. Perhaps the next time we catch an armed civilian shooting at our guys we will simply put a bullet in his head rather then worry about the possibility that someone will force him to wear panties on his head.

It is your type of gut-less hand wringing that will see us fighting this war forever. So screw the UAE port deal, and should they retaliate screw the UAE.

It's absolutely incredible that someone this late in the game would still be discussing "ownership".

The only thing at stake is an operating contract for a piece of property owned by the government (usually through public bonds).

Today's "newsies" are truly pitiful.

At the moment UAW is our most reliable and useful assembly point for supporting our forces in the Middle East.

Recall that we got kicked out of Saudi Arabia (and their "ports" contracts are untouched in this), and the Turks won't let us use their country for these purposes.

Oh, yeah, Jimmy Carter got us kicked out of Iran 30 years ago.

So, where do you propose going to support our forces with deep water port facilities (for aircraft carriers) and R&R (77,000 troops per year go to UAE for R&R)?

I don't think you can and you know it. Your ulterior motive is to get us out of the ME, turn the oil over to AlQaida and the terrorist regimes in the region, and return America to a low income agrarian society replete with a colorfully costumed peasantry and cute baby animals.

Gad!
