IRAN is to start work in the next six months on a second nuclear power station, the energy minister said, amid increasing tension with the West over its atomic programme.
"We have received the plans of (Iran's atomic energy chief) Gholam Reza Aghazadeh and the authorisation to start building the power station," said Energy Minister Parviz Fattah in comments published in local newspapers.
"We are expecting to start the construction of the power station in the next six months," he said.
Former energy minister, the reformist Habibollah Bitaraf, would be charged with the project, he said.
Iran's nuclear programme, which Tehran says is a drive for peaceful energy but is alleged by the United States to be a cover for weapons production, is due to be discussed on the UN Security Council next week amid the looming threat of sanctions.
Iran is building its first civilian nuclear power station near the southern city of Bushehr with Russian help but the project has been hit by a string of delays.
"The Russians have promised to finish the power station at the end of 2006. In previous years they have repeatedly delayed the start-up of the power station," said Fattah.
"We have complaints against the Russians and we hope that they will not postpone the start-up of the power station again," he added.
The Iranian parliament on Tuesday authorised the government to use over $US200 million in oil income in order to complete the station.
Aghazadeh has previously announced that Iran was inviting tenders for two new nuclear power stations and encouraged Russia to express its interest.
Both the new plants would be built in Bushehr, he said at the time.
I think we need to finish one war before we start another one.
If there is to be one it better be declared by the UN or another country. The U.S. is starting to look like dictator!
IMO, of course.
Unfortunatly, all responsbile adults are hated for doing the right thing at one time or another in their lifetimes. It just so happens that the USA is one of the few adults left on the planet, thats how good the lib brainwashing has been.
Mr. Pentagon planner, please add this to the target list!
We have allowed lunatics in North Korea and crazed zealot radicals in Pakistan to have nukes.
Why not Iran? Is three a crowd for you? We ALWAYS go wimpy--we will again.
If history is any guide, about 22 years of condemning Israel for taking care of the dirty work.
The best-laid plans of mullahs and men . . .
Well, I agree.
It would be pretty hard to settle a war with Iran when Iraq is still in progress.
IMO, Iran is a much bigger danger than Iraq ever was, or would ever become even. I dont think anything is going to be done about this, though. Five years down the line, we may have to live with a nuke armed, mullah run Iran in perpetuity.
that's does sit! send the UN Ispectors in! [/sarc]
Laughable post. The UN isn't able to organize and run a respectable food aid program much less declare war. Pin hopes of the United Neuters defending freedom or protecting your way of life and you'll be burka-clad and bowing to mecca five times a day.
So America looks like a dictator to you, eh? Perhaps you'd like to diddy on down to Cuba and see what dictatorship is really like. Or maybe you really belong on a liberal discussion forum instead of FR.
Israel won't tolerate that, they cannot, they would be obliterated.
"We´re at war. Iraq is a part of the war on terror. It is not the war on terror; it is a theater in the war on terror. And it´s essential we win this battle in the war on terror. By winning this battle, it will make other victories more certain in the war against the terrorists." President George W Bush
You are talking specifically. You must be a man.
I am talking about "in the eyes of the world."
How are we ever going to stay on good terms with countries who do not necessarily share our view points, if all they see is us invading these Arab countries? Or, those countries who do not share our view points?
And, why must you ASSUME that I need to be on a liberal discussion forum just because I worry that the U.S. is being drug into another war by outside forces? If you can't see it, then open your eyes.
Maybe you need to stop ASSUMING that people on FR who have different opinions than YOU are liberals!
Who, like France? Spain? Germany? Every one of them losing their own population, culture and identity to Eurabia encroachment. France and Germany are so dirty in the Oil for Food scandal, it'd rock the planet, to the extent we'll never know the true details of all that corruption. The allies of the US that help us militarily like Australia and Britain are fully on our side. Whether it be Iraq, Iran or tsunami assistance, it's the MILITARY that will effectively respond, NOT the UN!!
Here's a clue for you. Arab countries like Egypt, UAE, Qatar, as well as others are SCARED TO DEATH that Iran will get nukes. They'd privately be falling over silly with relief at having us take care of the situation, although their words would be publically critical or else silence. Nonetheless, Iran poses MUCH more of a threat to it's neighbors armed with nukes? Think we ought to ignore that? Think we ought to let Iran threaten their neighbors?
So you ever really LISTEN to what the President has to say??
If you want to worry about how Arab's view us, worry about the ports debacle. That's truely worth being concerned about and is going to bite us in the rear for a long time.
I assume you might need to be on a liberal discussion board because frankly, you sound like a liberal. Cowering approval from the UN and countries who hate America and will always hate America regardless of what we do or don't do, is generally a liberal trait.
Quite simply, we'll handle this situation, with allied assistance, because we are the only country who can.
Oh, and BTW, wrong gender guess too.
The UN is notoriously corrupt and spineless and the EU is spineless. And it does not matter what the world thinks of us. All that matters is doing what is right and that is preventing the mullahs from getting nukes.
I agree. It boils down to this. We take action or Israel does or Israeli and European cities (and trough terrorists US cities) become radioactive wastelands.
No problem. Bombers always have an ordnance or two for the return trip.
I agree with you. The ports deal and the iran nuke thing have seemed to have exposed the leftists on FR.
Well stated!!
