Col. John Mitchel drops out of US Senate race to unify against Mike DeWine

Beavercreek, Ohio, Friday, March 10, 2006: Today former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel John Mitchel withdrew from the US Senate race. In doing so he narrows the field to incumbent Mike DeWine and two challengers, Bill Pierce and David Smith.

Colonel Mitchel commented, “This was a difficult decision, but it was the right thing to do, however with two challengers still in the race, unless one withdraws soon, it’s likely the status quo remains in place. My primary reason for getting involved in politics almost a decade ago was to bring sanity to national defense and veterans issues. Way back then I was talking about illegal immigration, one sided trade deals that moved our manufacturing base, hard currency, and sensitive technology offshore, and a broken defense acquisition process that our Senators and House Reps were using more as a crutch to get reelected than serving our war fighters who offered up the supreme sacrifice to defend our liberty and freedom. I look at true patriots like Pat Tillman http://www.pattillmanfoundation.net/ who gave his life for America after walking away from a lucrative career in the NFL, and Jeremy Staat, Corporal Tillman’s former team mate at Arizona State who has also signed up to put himself on that wall protecting us from terrorists. It’s time Americans start recognizing the sacrifices made by our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. If we want to keep a strong military we have to put readiness, retention, and morale of our war fighters on the top of the list for national defense spending.”

Mitchel added, “Although I do not plan to publicly endorse either of the two remaining challengers, Mr. Pierce and Mr. Smith understand which one I feel is best qualified to serve Ohio in the US Senate. But it’s up to Bill and David to decide if Senator DeWine will face an up or down vote in the primary. I believe voters are tired of Republican kingmakers and phony, self-interested endorsers calling the shots, and it’s time the citizens and the candidates themselves make those decisions. For too long the special interest campaign cash, party bosses, and the media have steered the election process toward their preordained favorites, and if we continue to allow that, America will slide even deeper into the abyss of pay-to-play politics.”

I applaud Col. Mitchel for putting the anti-DeWine voters ahead of himself. I like Mitchel and would have voted for him, though other conservatives would have voted for Pierce. Splitting the anti-DeWine vote wouldn't have done any good. Mitchel showed a lot of leadership so we could unify behind one anti-DeWine candidate.

Many of the candidates who frequently run for office just want to see their name in print. Col. Mitchel is obviously not one of them. He served our country honorably in the military and still loves it enough to want to make a difference. I hope he gets elected to something in the future.

We should applaud Col. Mitchel for his unselfish act and unite behind Bill Pierce for US Senate. I don't think he'll beat DeWine, but it's looking like he'll get enough support to give DeWine some egg in the face.

First and foremost we must keep the Senate seat in Ohio in Republican hands, and if DeWine is the one who gives us more chances to do so, then I support him 100%.

Screw Dewhine , he's an anti-Second Amendment RINO .....We would be better served by a conservative pro-gun, pro-life Democrat .

Yeah, troll, that's it . If you can reasonably justify Mike Dewhine's co-sponsorship of anti-gun legislation among other RINO actions ,I will gladly accept your labelling of me as a troll (which I'm not) . I'm no fan of Dims , but I would gladly take a truly conservative Democrat over a Liberal Republican . Justify Dewhine , or consider yourself a sucker for a RINO ....

Don't you realize the Senate could tip into Dem control and we get no more conservative judges? I am sick of people like you saying they would vote for a conservative Dem over a RINO. Excuse me, do you want Hillary in charge of the Senate along with Ted Kennedy?

People that post like you just did remind me of Dems wanting Republicans to believe just that. Fortunately, in Ohio there is no such thing as a conservative Dem running for Senate -- very liberal yes; conservative no.

It is very simple: If DeWine has more chances of beating the democrat challenger "Brown" who is extremely liberal by the way then I will absolutely support DeWine to keep this Ohio Senate seat for Republicans.

At this point it doesn't matter, the Republicans have effectively sabotaged Harris in her Senate bid . So why is everyone so eager to support a RINO like DeWhine and sabotage a true conservative like Harris . Give it a rest ....

Well maybe you should try and put a real conservative up for the general election to take on Brown . Of course you can't justify Dewhine's RINO actions , but you need to work hard in the primary to defeat him . Otherwise you are accepting the way of the RINO ...

Yep you're right. Conservative Republican is always preferred but if it comes down to a choice between a RINO and a dem, take the RINO because it retains chairmanships. Chairman Leahy? Or in the House, how about Chairman Conyers?

I'll vote for Dewine in the general election but if I could get a real conservative on the ballot with my primary vote I would have no problem ditching Dewine and his fake flannel shirt, which matches his my buddy gang of 14 tee shirt.
Why can't we get a true conservative? All we get is Vonivich,Montgomery, and Petro might as well vote Brown ,Hagan Kasinich,Springer.
Tax ,spend let the welfare state in.
Mr.Blackwell please rethink your cloning position!

Name a RINO that doesn't vote party line ? I don't think that's what you mean , that's too easy . There are many RINO's .
DeWhine is a co-sponer with Diane Fineswine and her renewal of the so called bogus assault weapons ban . That right there should give true conservatives pause in voting for DeWhine to head the general election .He's anti-gun among other sellouts. Get him out now while you can , or you can complain about his sellouts for another 6 years (gang of 14, gun control, etc). Just think , if the Senate goes Dim, he will be right at home finally .

Right now the only way the Democrats will get either the house and/or senate will be if it's handed to them with easy victories. The GOP will put the best candidates forward not only to maintain the lead but increase it. If the Republicans can get a bigger lead in both chambers then the "Real Conservatives", not us fake ones (joke), will have a better chance at cashing in but until then the ones with the best chance will have to do. These RINO's are driving everyone nuts and we're getting to a point to where we can rely on them less but have some patience.
