Daschle Considering '08 Presidential Bid

By JOE KAFKA, Associated Press Writer 25 minutes ago

Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, accusing the GOP of spreading a message of fear, says he is considering a 2008 presidential bid.

"I haven't ruled anything out or anything in at this point," Daschle said in an interview Saturday night after a hometown dinner in his honor.

"I'm encouraged by the strong support many people have voiced for my candidacy around the country and in South Dakota. I'll make a decision at some point later on this year," he said.

Daschle said President Bush and Republicans have overemphasized the importance of the war on terror, and he said the U.S. is no safer now than it was before the Iraq invasion.

"This country is not more secure when a president infers that he is above the law and can wiretap and eavesdrop on average citizens," he said. "We're not more secure when we turn ports over to foreign countries."

"I once ran for President of the United States of America" does look good on the old resume. Tommy could probably go right into the "french fry guy" slot.

They'll go for anything that will get him out of the state.

Good point. I wonder how many days out of the year he actually sets foot in South Dakota anyway?

I can live with 'RATS like Daschle referring to murdering, Islamic terrorists as their "freedom fighters" but "average citizens" is going a little too far.

he's presently unemployed and needs gainful employment

I heard he had been cast as Tattoo in a remake of Fantasy Island.

Unfortunately, the first episode had Hillary as a guest star. She mistook "Tattoo" for her vibrator and kept trying to put batteries in him.

Da pain, Boss, da pain.

I'll never forget when the Senate Ethics Committee slapped down Torricelli and right after the announcement Dashcle came out on camera and said the committee found accusations against Sen. Torricelli "false and without foundation." Torricelli promptly resigned.

South Dakota is one of the most dependably Republican states in Presidential elections. Since statehood, the Democrats carried it only in 1896 (by a razorthin margin), in 1932 and 1936, and in 1964. When a Democrat from South Dakota was the nominee for President in 1972 (McGovern) he didn't carry his home state.

If Daschle's purpose is to get Hillary to consider him as her running mate, he's wasting his time...she's more likely to pick someone who might help carry a close state or appeal to a certain segment of the population.

If elected, Daschle would be the shortest President since James Madison.
