I agree...both sides were reacting quite vociferously...but, I think the name-calling was just as bad coming from the people opposed to the deal.

What did you think of Frist's statement that they need to go back and change the process....and have more "congressional oversight" on these deals???

Doesn't that put BUSINESS DEALS that involve mucho $$$$$$$$$$$ in the hands of Congressweinies that "could" be influenced???

I discovered The Macallan through a series of books by Katherine Kurtz and Deborah Turner Harris, The Adept series, about an "occult detective." Think Sherlock Holmes dealing with a black magic Moriarty. The hero was a Scottish psychiatrist (I picture Pierce Brosnan). Good books, but I enjoyed them most for the "atmospheric" descriptions of Scotland and England. Early on they spent a good bit of time on the merits of The Macallan.

During the time I was reading these books I was taken to a nice restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina, by IBM on a business trip. They prided themselves on a great cellar for both wines and whiskeys. Since it was on the vendors dime I asked if they had this single malt I'd heard of. It turned out they did and it was one dollar per year of aging, per shot. I went with the 18 (which turned out to be the best available at the time) rather than the 25. I was hooked!

I've since learned more about all whiskeys and have found the consensus of Scots is that the Famous Grouse is the one they choose, if they're having a blend.  That's good enough for me.  Of the American whiskey's I prefer the "sippin whiskeys" like Old Weller and the previously mentioned Jack Daniels, but it's too expensive for normal consumption.  I compromise on a Kentucky Bourbon whiskey, Evan Williams (neat, of course).

Having our ships in Dubai is a business deal too, one that profits both parties. It's not a favor the UAE is doing us. According to cva66snipe, we could as well use India ports, just as strategically. And an alliance with India is one I wholeheartedly support; I'm glad to see this admin furthering that, partly because India is a democracy AND they will surpass China in population 2010-2012.

So, fine. However, the repeating of buzz words by proponents of DPW's deal does not bolster the claim that their position is based on fact and reason.

I invite you and anyone else here to look into the provisions of CFIUS, a Committee that was formed by Executive Order in 1975 and which operates by a process that needs to be updated to post-9/11 times.

Although the issue started with one business deal, it has rightly shed light on national security and any glitches that need to be fixed.

Members of Congress actually listened to the constituents who contacted them. And they took action. We now await an American buyer and that's where it stands.

given that if all you say is true....

why are these same people not dealing with the security "glitches" on the border?

I suspect because no unions have lobbied Schumer to do so...

Yes, and we all know that his part was certainly not about Port Security. How he had the gall to even come within 100 feet of President Bush after the disgusting trashing and disrespect for the President tells me more about how slimey he really is than any pseudo bribes he takes from the Unions. If I was GWB I would ask The Secret Service to frisk King anytime he is at the White House or within close proximity to the President. His behavior was very bizarre and I do not trust him near the President.

I agreed with Duncan Hunters comment of making sure such deals would not effect national security. Idealy, I think this should be done on the executive level not congressional. It's supposed to be set up that way now but does not seem to work as intended. Hunter wants more input from DOD and Homeland security. Meaning, to me, they should be able to kill a deal if they believe it's in the nations interest. Since both agencies have congressional oversight now anyway, it's not much of a change in proceedure as much as a change in emphasis. At least, that's how I understood what he was saying.

This amounts to more of a tightening up of the process, as opposed to changing it that much.

Never, ever, put business deals in the hands of congress. There is too much of a temptation to help friends or hurt enemies, as we've seen all too often in the past.

The animosity has gotten way out of line and hasn't died down fast enough.

I honestly feel, that in the view of some FReepers here, it now marks a person as ignorant and foolish to openly love this country, to put America first.

Since I live in the most international city on the face of the earth, I do my part for good international relations every day. I want others to come to love and respect this country as much as I do. But make no mistake, it is always America First.

The Macallan is a very good whisky, I will grant you that.

But try Laphroaig, my personal favorite. It's an Islay malt without being too Islay, I think. They make a 30 and a 15, but my favorite is the 10. A little iodinish and sweet, but a nice well-rounded Scotch flavor. I much prefer it to Lagavulin, which tastes like paint thinner to me. On the other hand, my husband likes the Lagavulin better. You could throw a rock from one distillery and hit the other, if you had a major league arm . . .

Is this saying that PSI is the "most valuable player" in Port Security? And if I have THAT part right... what does the China and Dubai angle have to do with this?

PSI is a private company that sells transportation security solutions. The Chinese firm makes container inspection equipment, and PSI promotes that equipment for it's port-operator clients. Dubai plays in that a WORLD conference of shipping security is scheduled to be helped there this April. All the players will be there.

You are 100% right, regarding single issue voting. :)

LOL

Sheesh, you voted for Carter? Oi! You are a better person than I. I would NEVER have admitted that. ;)

I voted for Reagan. It was my first election. The last debate clinched it. When Idiot Inc. relied on his daughter Amy to determine this country's nuclear arms position, that scared the heck out of me. Gosh, I still remember my physical reaction to that. I got that deep sinking feeling that the man was a first class moron. If the Soviet Union had had the balls to do a first strike I truly believe this idiot would not have responded in kind. He would have been too busy discussing it with Amy. :)

Hopefully the one issue people on FreeRepublic will remember the Carter/Clinton years before they stay home and allow the worse of two evils into power. We can only hope. :)

A worthy idea, but I don't think it's one with legs.

O'Neill stated several times that he had no interest in politics, but that he simply could not let a scoundrel like skerry spew his lies un-rebutted (thank you once again Swifties!).

Sometimes it seems like we're caught on the razor's edge of mediocrity - the conservatives we'd love to have represent us have no interest (or stomach) for politics, and the ones that do, well, they are too "accommodating" for my taste.

What was it Reagan said about 80% of something being better than 100% of nothing? ;'}

I revile the stupid Dems as much as you do, believe me.
Just a couple of minutes of listening to Schumer's voice, and I feel deranged.
Of course, they're inconsistent.
I rejoiced that they would then have to embrace racial profiling as they opposed the DPW deal; and, they may yet have to embrace Halliburton! Hah.

OOh, the border... yes, they're the ultimate hypocrites on that one, that's why Republicans MUST do something.

No offense, but senators and representatives reacted rather than doing their jobs in getting the information before running to the cameras with wild accusiations and claims. There were very few voices of reason, saying they needed more information before making a premature, uninformed decision.

As Brit Hume said today (paraphrased) this is the best example of leadership since the anthrax scare, when they all ran away from the capital buildings from fear.

Exactly, and if he sticks his face out there on the Campaign Trail any of his competition could use that Clip from the Movie and Morph his face onto Nicholson's face. I think it is going to be a Hellish 2008 campaign that will probably start the day after this November election. Hllary's hit/goon squad against all the other Goon Squads. It will be this Union thug against that Union thug and I would love to sell tickets to the fights.
