They also have to realise that, The Good Life

It’s not exactly hell on earth here in Bush’s America.

Good news these days is hard to find. But for no good reason. The mainstream media highlight and overhype America's failures and challenges.

Americans today are better off than at any time in history and are overwhelmingly optimistic about the future. ................

As our lives have gotten longer, they have also gotten richer. America's economy continues to create jobs and wealth at an unprecedented pace. Over the past 40 years, per capita income in the United States has doubled. On top of that, Americans are enjoying more leisure time.

In contrast to the doom-and-gloom presented by the media, Americans are generally happy and optimistic. A 2004 Gallup poll found that more than half of Americans describe themselves as "very happy" and another 42 percent say they are "fairly happy." Just 6 percent describe themselves as "not too happy."

Read it in full.

I know you won't believe it but about 20 minutes
ago I just figured out how to do that and still
use spell check, it's tough to be old and
only semi-computer literate, but I try.

Well, snugs, I am in the same position as I was in 1999. I don't have a favorite, and will be paying attention over the next couple of years.

As I said, I will back whoever the nominee ends up being. If you are interested, here are my thoughts:

Allen, genial and real conservative. Was an excellent governor in Virginia. Tends to flub some public comments and I think from some of his actions and statements doesn't have a first-rate staff.

Romney...excellent speaker, no scandals, good reputation from saving the Salt Lake Olympics. Bad points...Massachusetts governorship doesn't allow much of a platform for Republicans, and the extent of his conservatism is unknown.

Guiliani...strong leadership, nationally known from his actions after 9/11, tough on crime, supportive of the military. Not conservative on social issues.

McCain...conservative and strong on military and war issues. I personally think the press will turn on him and dredge up all of his past scandals should he get the nomination.

Pence...well-spoken, no scandals, nice family, religious, very conservative...even more so than Allen. Not well-known outside of conservative circles and his home state (mine).

Frist...boring speaker, seen as weak by both Republicans and democrats (who have rolled him in the Senate). I think he is more popular in the South than around my neck of the woods.

Huckabee...nice guy, but I don't think the public is ready for another candidate from Arkansas.

As you can see, I am a realist and pragmatic. One of these gentlemen, or perhaps an unknown who hasn't surfaced yet, will be the nominee. I will support whoever wins the nomination.

Thanks for that info on Leahy. He is particularly smarmy when he is lying thru his teeth.

Thanks rodguy911. Speaking of Florida, there is a strong rumor that Katherine Harris will withdraw from the senate race this week. Is it true? Anyone know?

McCain will probably self-destruct, just as he's done in the past.

Don't get TIVO unless you are prepared to have it for the rest of your life.

You CANNOT give it up, once you get it.

BTW, Duncan Hunter and Mike Pence did great on FNS this morning. Maybe it's only me, but both of these guys answered Wallace's questions well and fairly. Wallace did us a favor by asking the question of problems between the presidency and congress, and it gave us the opportunity to get the best answer into the public discourse.

Compared to Chris Dodd, on now, our side makes more sense and shows us with positive attitudes as Democrats continue complaining about everything.

"And I always thought he (Edwards) was just a pretty-boy ambulance chaser..."

Yeah, he is - without the pretty, and without the morals of the usual slip and fall lawyer.

Remember his question to Cheney during the debate? And remember how he didn't even realize that Cheney was being ironic when Cheney thanked him for his concern about his family?

I saw Placido Domingo on a pbs show years ago when he was teaching young opera students. He hit a note that was unbelievable. I've always liked his voice better than Pavarotti (sp.)

Word at WSJ is what happened a year ago to Al Hunt

What did happen to Al Hunt? I noticed his column stopped appearing; can't say I missed it, but apparently I missed the story behind it.
