BOOKSTORE CENSORS [SF clerk calls Fallaci "Fascist"]
The New York Post ^ | March 11, 2006 | By CATHY SEIPP

A FRIEND of mine took his daughter to visit the famous City Lights in San Francisco, explaining that this store is important because years ago it sold books no other store would - even, perhaps especially, books whose ideas many people found offensive. So, though my friend is no Ward Churchill fan, he didn't really mind the prominent display of books by the guy who famously called 9/11 victims "little Eichmanns."

But it did occur to him that perhaps the long-delayed English translation of Oriana Fallaci's new book, "The Force of Reason," might finally be available, and that, because Fallaci's militant stance against Islamic militants offends so many people a store committed to selling banned books would be the perfect place to buy it. So he asked a clerk if the new Fallaci book was in yet.

"No," snapped the clerk. "We don't carry books by fascists."

Just savor the absurd details of this for a minute. City Lights has a long and proud history of supporting banned authors - owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti was indicted (and acquitted) for obscenity in 1957 for selling Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and a photo in the store's main room shows Ferlinghetti proudly posing next to a sign reading, "BANNED BOOKS." City Lights also has been featured in the ACLU's annual Banned Books Week events.

A modern college education is largely four years of partying interspersed with periods of half-baked liberal socialist and communist indoctrination followed by about 10 years of wasted life while the former student attempts to shed the bullshirt.

Todays liberals are the real fascists. And probably not all that bright. Calling things "fascist" by reflex is a good way to not have to think about them. I despise liberalism.

This reminds me of seeing two different cars this week with a sticker calling bush an "American Terrorist. The drivers of both cars were either in their late teens or 20's. I am not very that much older than they are. I could imagine some of the music they listen to. It is really sad to see people believing that tripe, especially when there is so much information to counter it. I wonder if these same idiots would hail Castro has a great humanitarian.

Do you include science and engineering in that? If you go get a degree in, for instance, chemical engineering, you'll probably spend the 10 years after college making lots of money.

One of my sisters is also a Wellesley graduate

Somehow, this situation reminds me of that old Country and Western song, "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"!

I would have gone to see if he was carrying Mein Kampf and then asked him if he knew who wrote it.

To people like this a working definition of "fascist" would be anyone they don't like or agree with.

Wellesley may well be the worst example of political correctness in the history of US "higher" education. A young friend of may came back from there with a degree in Feminist Studies. She now works at NOW's national headquarters. She is the most intolerant person I know.

This is the kind of hypocrisy that is typical of the far left.
There is nothing surprising about this story at all except that the author was apparently surprised.

I believe she was the one who was asked the difference between a radical Moslem and a moderate Moslem and she said, words to the effect, the length of their beards.

Your comment is the fallacy of petitio principi. I don't see why such huge amounts of tax dollars should go to support the vast Liberal Arts apparatus which dominates most universities in order to support a small engineering school perched welk-like on its back. Two thirds of the tax gobbling state universities could be easily eliminated with no loss to the culture or the economy. Alternately, two thirds of any given public university could be given the same treatment. They are the breeding dens of the Anti-American Left. Personally, the only thing I would miss would be the football teams. But most of those are semiprofessional anyway.

But let's also say that one of the great paradoxes of our time is that two groups most endangered by political Islam, gays and women, somehow still find ways to defend it.

Evil always eats its own. "By their fruits shall you know them," we were promised, and with failing to recognize their own harvest, fashionable moralists unite themselves to their own destruction.

she is physically and mentally incapable of having a reasoned discussion of anything that crosses some imaginary line of political correctness

Physically? Woof, she must be a lively "debater"! You have my sympathy.

Actually, I was asking whether you included engineering in that. I wasn't sure. It really annoys me when people don't differentiate between worthless programs such as womens' studies and useful pursuits such as mechanical engineering.

In my ideal world I would keep the math based programs and eliminate most of the touchy-feely stuff.

My ideal university would have a calculus requirement in the Freshman year.

A young friend of may came back from there with a degree in Feminist Studies.

That's interesting. I've often wondered how people with degrees in feminist studies, black studies, or other "oppression studies" can make a living.

"Do you want fries with that?"
