A FRIEND of mine took his daughter to visit the famous City Lights in San Francisco, explaining that this store is important because years ago it sold books no other store would - even, perhaps especially, books whose ideas many people found offensive. So, though my friend is no Ward Churchill fan, he didn't really mind the prominent display of books by the guy who famously called 9/11 victims "little Eichmanns."
But it did occur to him that perhaps the long-delayed English translation of Oriana Fallaci's new book, "The Force of Reason," might finally be available, and that, because Fallaci's militant stance against Islamic militants offends so many people a store committed to selling banned books would be the perfect place to buy it. So he asked a clerk if the new Fallaci book was in yet.
"No," snapped the clerk. "We don't carry books by fascists."
Just savor the absurd details of this for a minute. City Lights has a long and proud history of supporting banned authors - owner Lawrence Ferlinghetti was indicted (and acquitted) for obscenity in 1957 for selling Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and a photo in the store's main room shows Ferlinghetti proudly posing next to a sign reading, "BANNED BOOKS." City Lights also has been featured in the ACLU's annual Banned Books Week events.

Savor bump
I read this on the subway this morning, it's beyond disgraceful!
Ah yes, those darned "liberals" are just so tolerant, open minded, warm and loivng aren't they?
Leftism and "liberalism" is a one way street.
The clerk probably wouldn't be able to define the word 'fascist' even after reading its definition.
Dog bites man
Just wait till the right people are in charge, then this book clerk will be the first in line to put a bullet through the skulls of those who hold intolerant views.
BUMP
Betcha City Lights carries the works of Ezra Pound. (Antisemitic fascist poet).
Yep, certain people in the US are making it harder and harder to feel sorry for them if they ever fall under the rule of radical Islam.
Next time I'm North Beach I think I will stop there and see if they have Ann Coulter or David Horowitz's latest books.
Yes, I bet they do, and Pound was an out-and-out avowed Fascist of the official stripe.
Leftists never actually believe in "Freedom". They know that practically no one will accept the logical outcome of Marxism which is the destruction of personal freedom in favor of collective control. Their kind of Freedom is better defined as "License".
Bump.
Bump.
I bet you could find a copy of Mein Kampf in City Lights.
Probably a few copies of the koran too.
One of my sisters is also a Wellesley graduate. I love her very much, but sadly I know from firsthand experience that even though she is very bright, she is physically and mentally incapable of having a reasoned discussion of anything that crosses some imaginary line of political correctness. That must have been a learned response - because she shares the same genes and similar childhood home environment with me.
I am perfectly capable of fairly stating the views of my political opponents and debating them on an honest level - if I had to, I could take the opposite side in such a debate and score plenty of points. But that is out of the question with her and with her Wellesley-educated peers that I have met. My sister did not formally major in the intellectually- and academically-bankrupt field of "women's studies", but the stubborn and dogmatic responses that she shows to certain topics lead me to believe that she got infected with a full dose of it just by spending four years on that campus.
Their phone number is: 415-362-8193.
