BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro - Slobodan Milosevic, the former Yugoslav leader on trial for alleged war crimes, was found dead in his prison cell at the U.N. tribunal in The Hague, Belgrade's B-92 and Serbia's state radio said Saturday. He was 65.
A U.N. war crimes prosecution official in the Dutch capital, speaking on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed the report to The Associated Press.

How ironic that the UN chastises US for prison conditions!!
Whoa!!
I think the same kind of "water-muddying" happened around the time of the "kidnapping" and disappearance of Margaret Hassan.
A number of women were kidnapped and released around the time that Hassan was "kidnapped," but not released. Perhaps Hassan was not killed in a mob-style, drive-by shooting, because someone was afraid that killing her that way would draw attention to details surrounding her life in Iraq. So they decided to stage a number of "kidnappings," to make it look like it was a trend going on at the time.
My guess is, Hassan had "dirt" on someone involved in the oil-for-food scandal, though perhaps she didn't realize it at the time. I don't think she was involved in the oil-for-food scandal, but she might have had some suspicions about the program or have been able to give testimony which contradicted the testimony of some potential defendant in the OFF scandal.
Profile: Margaret HassanDublin-born charity worker Margaret Hassan moved to Iraq 30 years ago, and began working for Care International soon after it began operations there in 1991. When she was kidnapped, she had been head of the charity's operations in the country for some 12 years. [snip]
Care International is the world's largest humanitarian relief agency, with a presence in 72 countries. It has focused efforts in Iraq since the war on providing emergency relief and medical aid, and restoring access to clean water.
Slobodan Milosevic is dead. Good.
I wonder...that nutcase Carla Del Ponte (is she still the prosecutor?) will likely demand to proceed and convict him post mortem!
Maybe the war crimes tribunal will finally go after Hasim Thaci and Agim Ceku and the other KLA terrorist monsters their terrorist acts and continuing crimes against the Serb (and all other non-albanian) population of Kosovo-Metohija!! (/sarcasm)
I see those guys as the greatest monsters of all.
If you mean Thaci and Ceku (and the KLA) I agree completely. Supporting the KLA was one of the biggest mistakes this nation has ever made. I knew it then and I know it even more now.
I remember screaming about that on this board till my fingers bled.
It really makes me sickened to think about what we did over there...and the disaster that remains. I lived in Savannah for a couple of years and met an Army Captain stationed at Fort Stewart. He wason his way to Kosovo and I told him to be careful and watch his back. His reply was "no kidding those albanians will smile at you to your face and then shoot you in the back." He got it. He told me he made all the troops under him read kosovo.com and learn about the real hisrtory of the area. And he insisted the KLA are terrorists.
"I'm confused by your tag line, 'just the facts'? You have none. You have a lot to learn. You bought into the vilification of Milosevic by the world shakers and still keep up repeating baseless accusations. It won't fly here on FR."
You are right Milosevic was a saint, heck he was even better than Jesus, murdering all of those heathens' children. Your denial of ethnic cleansing is what will not fly here on FR. Why don't you go visit Srebinica and come back to this thread afterwards to deny the acts of your good buddy Milosevic and his accomplices Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic.
I've never understood Americans who support dictatorial regimes accused of murdering innocent civilians. Which aspects of Milosevic's rule did you find to be close to the American ideal we all strive for? How can you even call yourself a republican when you obviously support dictatorships?
I mispelled Srebrenica. My mistake for not spell checking.
..Americans who support dictatorial regimes...
Milosevic was twice elected by majority votes. There are many Americans accusing W of being a dictator, but neither he or Milosevic, or Putin, or Blair were in fact dictators.
....accused of murdering innocent civilians...
But in 5 years they couldn't make it stick in the light of day. IMO he murdered no one based on the trial evidence.
... Milosevic's rule did you find to be close to the American ideal we all strive for?
Milosevic was the elected leader of SERBIA, the most Democratic country in Europe then and may still be. They have a high percentage mix of minorities, and it's where all the refugees ran to as a first choice.
How old are you? This great man is dead, and no longer able to defend himself. Only Captain Blye would whip a dead body. Just when, 'cccp hater', will your unjustified hate be satisfied?
Your denial of ethnic cleansing is what will not fly here on FR
The ethnic cleansing is indisputable. Millions of Serbs have been cleansed from their homes in Bosnia and Kosovo. Now that's a fact!
Yes, and IMO W was wrong. He won't sign the US on to any international court, because they are POLITICAL , but turned his head when Milosevic was subjected to it.
.. I'll be satisfied when revisionist historians ...
So, you think that the history of the Balkans, is as written by the Clinton and the MSP? And you subscibe to it?
Besides which as commander of the Yugoslav Army Milosevic...
Milosevic was NOT commander of the Yugo Army. He was commander of the Serb Army.
Yugoslav Army Milosevic cannot possibly claim ignorance of abuses going on under his command
In the Tribunal there was no credible verbal or paper that he was in charge. Where they could Serbia punished their own abusers.
IMO a mass grave is, mildly put, more than one body in one hole. That was never found in Kosovo.
Help yourself, dig up the Tribunal video archives, and watch a few days of it, then come back.
"Milosevic was NOT commander of the Yugo Army. He was commander of the Serb Army"
You are correct (Mladic was commanding the Yugoslavian army), that was my mistake. In one sense you are also correct about this trial being a farce. This trial is useless without the two other major defendents (Karadzic & Mladic) in custody and in front of the witness stand. Both of whom are purported to be in the country yet no one formally knows where they are. I would have to say that your hatred of Clinton and the ICC has colored your judgment a little in regard to Milosevic and his cronies. Regardless of whether charges of genocide can be proven in court (or for that matter whether the ICC is legitimate tribunal) it is doubtless that thousands of individuals were killed in response to events created and condoned by these 3 individuals. Milosevic started multiple failed wars in a rediculous attempt to unite a "greater serbia", and carried out through his proxies criminal acts which many Japanese & German leaders post WWII were execurted for committing.
Think the ICC is illegitimate, thats a another discussion. Think the Clintons wrote the history of the balkans, ok you have a valid point. Think Milosevic was a great man....you are off your rocker!
