Reputed gang members have been disappearing from the streets of South Florida.

Four members of the Latin Kings in Broward, gone. The leader of a Mara Salvatrucha-13 crew in Lake Worth, nowhere to be seen. Members of Los Vatos Locos and 18th Street Gang, vanquished from the streets of Miami. On Friday, it was revealed why.

During the past few weeks, authorities have rounded up 22 suspected gang members in South Florida as part of a national sweep that netted 375 gang members in 23 states. The initiative is part of Operation Community Shield, an anti-gang program aimed at dismantling "transnational, transborder" gangs, according to Keith Perniciaro, deputy special agent in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for Miami.

Well, they've penetrated well down into South Florida, although I've never seen them congregate as a gang. Maybe tomorrow at Calle Ocho? The one's I've seen are working their tails off on construction crews rebuilding homes damaged by Wilma. Even chatted with two I suspected were MS-13, seems we know the same spots like "Brasilian Beach" in Pompano.

On the whole, I've noticed more crime in the South Florida area, but it hasn't been just the gangs. Perverts are all over the place now, and becomming more daring in their assaults on young children. Two incidents involving 3 children and two men in our area recently. Both cases the children were outside in an unsupervised area (which wouldn't have been an issue when I was a kid, so I can see where some people might consider it safe these days.) I'm gunning for those creeps myself.

As far as MS-13, though, I haven't noticed anything, but I'm known for tunnel-vision. Anyone down here seeing the impact of a new gang?

North in Port St. Lucie you see more gang related grafitti but I suspect it is really just posers that think it cool to be in little boy gangs.

I agree, there's a lot of "gang chic" mentality in schools. It serves as a portal for recruitment later though. I hear they're using internet chat rooms as well. Very sad that so many children are bereft of meaning in their lives that gangs have so much appeal.

We don't have enough corruption here in PSL yet, but we're working on it.

They do all hide here when WPB or Mijami is looking for 'em but those "Non-Aggressive Driving Corridor" signs on PSL Blvd must keep them all in check! :-)

Gangs have moved into suburbia in FL, my mother mentioned that someone had been painting stop signs around the neighborhood. Last time I visited, I could see that it was the gang tag for the Latin Kings. The marked out my mom's neighborhood as their turf.

The only sweep you'll see in CA is the DNC registering them as Democrats prior to the next election. Watch for the next "Bullets for Votes" drive.

Did they get Hillary Clinton?

She is a gangstah supporter, and cultivates them as part of her base, the"get felon voters campaign."

The "gang chic" was really strong here in So Dade in the years directly after Andrew, but now seems to have faded, you don't see nearly as much graffitti. During the 80's, the drug smuggling gangs were much in evidence, but they too seem to be less obvious, although I believe So FL is not the smuggling center it once was.

Still, I'm glad they are going after these guys, there's no reason for society to tolerate them.
