LOS ANGELES, March 10 — Three weeks ago, Dr. Wafa Sultan was a largely unknown Syrian-American psychiatrist living outside Los Angeles, nursing a deep anger and despair about her fellow Muslims.

Today, thanks to an unusually blunt and provocative interview on Al Jazeera television on Feb. 21, she is an international sensation, hailed as a fresh voice of reason by some, and by others as a heretic and infidel who deserves to die.

In the interview, which has been viewed on the Internet more than a million times and has reached the e-mail of hundreds of thousands around the world, Dr. Sultan bitterly criticized the Muslim clerics, holy warriors and political leaders who she believes have distorted the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran for 14 centuries.

She said the world's Muslims, whom she compares unfavorably with the Jews, have descended into a vortex of self-pity and violence.

That's a death sentence. Ibn Warraq had to remain anonymous after renouncing Islam and the same is true of the pseudonymous contributors to the book on Leaving Islam that he edited. The penalty for apostasy in Islam is death. There are no free thinkers among Muslims who can be faithful and still be good Muslims. The clerics do not allow questioning of the Koran and more importantly their interpretations of it. This brave woman gets doubly condemned for saying what Islam is not prepared to acknowledge and because she is a woman, who happens to be a second class subject in Islam. Its a cult stuck in the Middle Ages and as long as it remains there, its appeal to the rest of mankind as an intellectual and moral force will be limited.

In a way, one can only hope this is true. This really shows the mentality of these wackos. True dissent by an educated woman, cartoons by some Danish guys, which will harm our death cult more? Hmmmmmm, hard to say.

Amazing to see this in the Times. Interesting to note that they could not find one, not one other "moderate" muslim to quote, and basically said that they are all living in fear. Or maybe there just aren't very many of them.

Actually she is naive and silly, to declare she is an apostate, and then give advice to those of the religion she has left is hopelessly naive. She needs to go to the next logical conclusion and condemn Islam outright, or her arguments will be dismissed.

Great post...and she's right. It's the difference between staying mired in the eighth century, whining and feeling sorry for yourself or moving ahead. (She's probably on their hit list now, unfortunately.)

It sounds as if she's speaking to Muslims who don't agree with Islamofascism/terrorism/beheadings/murder, but are afraid to speak out. The few rational Muslims left, if any.

Anybody notice that the NY Times virtually gave out her address in that article? Absolutely no attempt to protect her and her family even though the article clearly described the death threats she was receiving.

The liberals at the Times would have done anything to protect one of their own but they helped the enemy map a path to the door of this courageous woman.
