Mystery man in terrorist investigation
WTVG-- March 2, 2006 - The trainer's identity may have been found.
Here's the latest on the man who helped investigators piece together a case against three suspected terrorists.
The so-called "trainer" is now linked to the Toledo-based Kind Hearts Organization, a Muslim charity. Employees say the Trainer was a part-time Kind Hearts employee known as "Balil". The Toledo Blade and Cleveland Plain Dealer identify Balil as 39-year-old Darren Griffin.
It's believed he is no longer in Toledo and is under the protection of the federal government. Meanwhile, Kind Hearts says the Trainer often tried to talk politics in the office.
The FBI is not yet confirming Griffin is the "Trainer". Kind Hearts Organization was shut down earlier in February, after being accused by the government for sending money to a terrorist organization.
Kind Hearts' attorney says the allegations are false.

Lists of donors, a book on how Arabs and Jews can get along, a "Military Resurgence Book," and a map of Israel were among items seized last month by federal authorities who raided the Toledo-based KindHearts charity.
The U.S. Treasury Department padlocked and froze $1 million in assets of KindHearts for alleged ties to Hamas, a Middle Eastern group on the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations and the victor in the recent Palestinian Authority elections.
The inventory of items taken during the execution of two federal search warrants - one at KindHearts' offices at 3450 West Central Ave., Suite 366, and the other at the home of the charity's leader, Khaled Smaili, at 3203 Woodley Rd. - was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Toledo.
The warrants were executed two days before three Toledo-area men were arrested on charges of allegedly planning terrorist attacks against American soldiers and others in the Middle East. The Toledo trio is accused of providing material support to terrorists; one man is accused of threatening President Bush.
The government has said the investigations of the charity and the terrorist suspects are separate, but "coordinated." They would not elaborate on any connection.
A fourth man identified in the federal indictment only as "the Trainer," but identified by local Muslims as 39-year-old Toledoan Darren Griffin, or "Bilal," worked part time at KindHearts for more than three years.
